The two sides of the station
Centraal has a city side and a water side. The Stationsplein facing Damrak and the old centre is given over to trams, the metro entrance, cyclists and pedestrians, and cars cannot stop there. The IJ side (IJzijde), facing the river, has the ferries to Amsterdam-Noord, the bus station and road access along De Ruijterkade and the IJ tunnel approaches. This is where taxis and pre-booked cars meet passengers. Walk through the station's central passages to the IJ side and follow signs for taxis and pick-up. Curbside meeting, with a concourse meet as an option
Your chauffeur waits curbside at the designated area on the IJ side as standard and does not come onto the platforms by default. Train tracking means the chauffeur is timed to the actual arrival. An ICE from Frankfurt that is 30 minutes late is not your cost. Included waiting is 15 minutes from the real arrival; beyond that it is billed in 15-minute blocks.
Bags, bikes and the walk out
The walk from any platform to the IJ side is short and level, with escalators and lifts. The hazard in Amsterdam is not stairs but bicycles: keep to the footpaths when you cross cycle lanes with a trolley. Cars in the Luxury Executive Sedan class take two travellers with two cases. Driving in central Amsterdam
The canal ring is narrow, with one-way bridges, delivery bays and busy cycle routes, and many streets restrict through traffic. Door-to-door is possible to most hotels, but some addresses on the smaller canals are reached on foot for the last few metres. Bridges over the canals also carry weight limits, and a Sprinter Van may need to stop on a wider street nearby. When you book, give the full hotel address so the affiliate can plan the approach. Amsterdam also has a low-emission zone (milieuzone) inside the A10 ring; the licensed cars used for our trips meet its rules.
Intercity alternatives by car
Trains cover most of the Netherlands well, but a car wins with luggage, groups or tight door-to-door timing. Rotterdam is about 75 km and roughly an hour. The Hague and Scheveningen are 50 minutes to an hour. Keukenhof gardens, open in spring, are about 40 minutes. Utrecht is about 40 minutes, Giethoorn about 1 h 30, and Brussels about 2 h 45 by road. Cancelling a Amsterdam Centraal pickup more than 72 hours ahead costs nothing. On an Amsterdam Centraal booking, inside 72 hours the charge is 10 %, inside 48 hours it is 50 %, and inside 24 hours, or if nobody shows, it is the full fare. A change of train is free if you send the new number.
