The Port of Galveston cruise terminals
Galveston Island's cruise terminals line Harborside Drive on the ship channel, on the north side of the island, a few blocks from the Strand Historic District. The Port of Galveston has expanded quickly and now runs several terminals, including Cruise Terminals 1 and 2 near downtown and the newer Terminal 10 at Pier 10, with further capacity added in recent years. Lines that sail from Galveston include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, and which line uses which building changes with new ships. Check the terminal number on your boarding documents.

Houston traffic peaks on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and the I-45 causeway onto the island slows on Saturday mornings when several ships turn around. Weather matters too: Gulf storms can close roads and delay sailings, so watch the port's notices in hurricane season, June through November.
Airport choice: Hobby or Bush?
Houston Hobby is closer to Galveston and handles mostly domestic flights, so it is the easier start for many US cruisers. George Bush Intercontinental carries the international routes and more airlines, but it sits north of the city, and the drive runs through or around Houston. The chauffeur tracks either flight, waits 30 minutes free on domestic arrivals and 60 minutes on international arrivals, and meets you at the airport's pre-arranged pickup area. Meet and greet inside baggage claim is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Sailing day at the terminal curb
Pulling up at the terminal, the chauffeur stops in the drop-off lane and unloads; porters take the large bags and tag them for your stateroom. Debarkation and the ride home

For flights home, allow the full drive plus airport check-in. From Galveston, most guests are comfortable with a Hobby departure after about 12:30 pm and an IAH departure after about 1:30 pm; international flights from IAH are safer later in the afternoon.
Before and after the cruise: where to stay
On the island, the Hotel Galvez, the San Luis Resort and the Moody Gardens Hotel are all within 15 minutes of the terminals, and the Tremont House sits in the Strand a short walk from the piers. Staying on the island the night before takes the Houston traffic out of the equation. Travellers who want city time first often stay in the Galleria, downtown or near Hobby, then book the transfer in the morning.
Private tours on the island and in Houston
Hourly bookings run for a minimum of 3 hours. On the island: the Strand, the 1892 Bishop's Palace, Seawall Boulevard and Moody Gardens. On the mainland: Space Center Houston at the Johnson Space Center, about 30 minutes from the port, Kemah Boardwalk, or a longer day in Houston's Museum District.
