DCA terminals
National Airport sits on the Virginia bank of the Potomac, about 5 km south of the National Mall, run by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. There are two terminals.
- Terminal 1: the original 1941 building, with a small number of gates.
- Terminal 2: the main terminal, opened in 1997, with the long glass-domed hall, the gate piers and the newer Concourse E that replaced the old bus-boarding gate.

DCA has its own Metrorail station on the Blue and Yellow lines, reached on foot from Terminal 2, and it is the quickest public link to downtown for light travellers; see WMATA. For Amtrak to New York or Boston, the car can drop you at Washington Union Station, usually 15 to 25 minutes away. A car wins for Maryland suburbs, Tysons and anyone arriving late.

Departing from DCA: pickup timing and security lines
National's security checkpoints can queue on Monday mornings and Thursday and Friday evenings, when the government and consulting crowd heads home. For a domestic flight, a pickup two hours ahead from downtown or Capitol Hill is usually enough; from Bethesda or Tysons, allow two and a half hours at peak. National Landing, the Pentagon and Old Town Alexandria

National Landing, the name now used for Crystal City, Pentagon City and Potomac Yard, is home to large technology and defence offices and a cluster of hotels within ten minutes of the terminal. Visitors to the Pentagon are dropped at the designated visitor area, and the chauffeur needs the entrance named in your pass instructions. Old Town Alexandria, with its King Street hotels and restaurants, is a short drive south along the parkway and a quieter base than downtown for a few days of meetings.
