Dulles has one landside building, the Eero Saarinen-designed Main Terminal, and four midfield concourses, A, B, C and D. Passengers travel between them on the AeroTrain or, for some gates, on the airport's distinctive mobile lounges.

Standard service is curbside pickup at the area Dulles designates for pre-arranged vehicles, on the arrivals roadway outside the lower-level baggage claim. The chauffeur messages you after landing with the door number. International passengers leave the International Arrivals Building into the same Main Terminal and walk out to the same kerb.

Customs and immigration timing at IAD
Dulles is the region's main long-haul gateway, with afternoon banks from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Processing through US Customs and Border Protection typically takes 25 to 60 minutes, including the AeroTrain or mobile lounge ride from the gate. Global Entry and the CBP Mobile Passport Control app help eligible travellers. Diplomatic passport holders may have separate processing. How long is the drive from Dulles into Washington?
Dulles is 26 miles west of the White House. The Dulles Airport Access Road runs toll-free for airport traffic to the Beltway, and from there I-66 leads into the city.

The Silver Line and other alternatives
The Metro Silver Line station at Dulles, opened in 2022, connects to the Main Terminal by a walkway and runs to downtown Washington in about 50 to 55 minutes, with stops at Reston, Tysons and Rosslyn. Details are on WMATA. It works well for a solo traveller with light luggage and a hotel near a station. For heavy bags, an official visit, a group or a late-evening landing, a car is quicker and easier.

Getting to Dulles for a departure
Allow two hours at the airport for domestic flights and three for international, plus the AeroTrain or mobile lounge ride to your concourse. From downtown DC, leave 60 to 75 minutes before you want to be at the kerb on a weekday afternoon; from Tysons, 30 minutes is usually enough. The chauffeur drops you on the upper departures level of the Main Terminal.

Washington's calendar and road closures
Official Washington runs on its own schedule. The IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings, usually in April, and Annual Meetings, usually in October, bring finance ministers and central bankers through Dulles in large numbers. The National Cherry Blossom Festival, usually from late March to mid-April, fills hotels near the Tidal Basin. State visits, summits and presidential movements close streets around the White House, the Capitol and the embassies at short notice, and chauffeurs route around them as they happen. When you book for these periods, add as much detail as you can about your destination so the chauffeur can plan the approach.
Winter weather at Dulles
Snow and ice at Dulles are less frequent than in Boston or Chicago, but a few inches can close federal offices and slow the Access Road and I-66. Dulles keeps operating through most storms. The fare and the included waiting do not change with the weather, and an SUV is a sensible choice in a snowstorm.
