About Guadalajara International Airport
GDL, officially Aeropuerto Internacional Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, lies about 17 km south of the city centre on the highway to Chapala, in the municipality of Tlajomulco de Zuniga. It is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (GAP) and is one of Mexico's busiest airports, with a large share of flights to US cities. Most airline traffic uses the main passenger terminal, and GAP has been expanding the airport with new terminal capacity, so check which building your airline uses on the GAP airport site before you travel.
Immigration and customs when you land at GDL
International passengers pass Mexican immigration first. Mexico has moved major airports to a digital record of entry in place of the old paper tourist card, and officers may ask about the purpose and length of your stay and your hotel. The National Migration Institute publishes current rules. After baggage reclaim comes customs, where you declare goods and press the well-known random-selection button: green, you walk out; red, your bags are opened for a quick check.
Expect 25 to 60 minutes from landing to the exit for an international arrival, and 15 to 30 minutes on a domestic flight from Mexico City or Tijuana. International flights include 60 minutes of waiting from touchdown and domestic flights 30 minutes; after that, waiting is billed in 15-minute blocks.

The ring road (Periferico) and Avenida Lopez Mateos carry most airport traffic, and weekday evening peaks can add 20 minutes. Guadalajara sits at about 1,550 metres above sea level, so evenings are cooler than visitors expect, and the rainy season from about June to September brings heavy afternoon storms that briefly flood some underpasses. Can I take a train from Guadalajara airport?
Not today. Guadalajara's Mi Tren light rail links Zapopan, the centre and Tlaquepaque, but there is no station at the airport. Buses run along the Chapala highway, and the airport's authorised taxis sell fares from booths in the hall. A booked car avoids the booth and the queue.

Events that move Guadalajara traffic
The Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) fills Expo Guadalajara usually in late November and early December and is one of the largest book fairs in the Spanish-speaking world. The International Mariachi and Charreria Festival usually runs in late summer. Trade shows run through much of the year. During these weeks, hotels near Expo fill and the Lopez Mateos corridor slows; book cars early. Multi-car event transportation is planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing.
Intercity trips from GDL

Lake Chapala and the lakeside town of Ajijic, with their mild climate and waterfront walks, are 30 to 45 minutes south of the airport.
