Itami is Osaka's domestic airport
Despite the name "Osaka International Airport", Itami has handled domestic flights only since Kansai International opened in 1994. It sits on the border of Itami, Toyonaka and Ikeda, north-west of central Osaka, and is operated by Kansai Airports, which also runs Kansai and Kobe airports. The terminal is a single building, rebuilt in stages and completed in 2020, with a South side used mainly by JAL group flights and a North side used mainly by ANA group flights. The central area between them holds shops and restaurants. Tokyo Haneda is the busiest route, followed by Sapporo New Chitose, Fukuoka, Okinawa Naha and Kagoshima.
Where your chauffeur picks you up
Curbside pickup at the area Itami designates for hired and pre-booked cars is the standard service. Once you collect your bags on the South or North side, message your chauffeur, who will tell you which exit and bay to use. By default the chauffeur stays with the car rather than coming inside.

Operating hours
Itami is surrounded by homes, so flights are restricted to roughly 07:00 to 21:00. That means late arrivals cluster between 20:00 and 21:00, when the taxi queue gets long. A pre-booked car avoids the queue. The last departures also bunch up in the evening, so allow for heavier traffic on the approach roads.

Rail and bus from Itami
The Osaka Monorail stops at the airport and links to the Hankyu Takarazuka line at Hotarugaike and to the Midosuji subway at Senri-Chuo. Airport limousine buses run to Umeda, Namba, Shin-Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. Both are good value with light luggage. A private car earns its place when you are three or four people sharing, travelling with children, or heading somewhere the bus does not stop, such as a ryokan in Arima Onsen or a factory in Higashiosaka. Day trips and hourly use

Connecting between Itami and Kansai
Some itineraries land at one Osaka airport and leave from the other, for example a domestic flight from Sapporo into Itami followed the next morning by an overseas departure from Kansai. The road trip between the two usually takes 60 to 80 minutes across the Hanshin Expressway and the Sky Gate Bridge to the island. Book it as a single fixed-fare transfer with both flight numbers in the notes, and allow for international check-in and security at Kansai, which open well before departure. If you are staying overnight in between, a hotel in Umeda or near Shin-Osaka splits the distance.
Waiting and flight tracking
Your flight is tracked from departure. Itami arrivals are domestic, so 30 minutes of waiting from actual landing are included, with 15-minute blocks after that. Delays on the Haneda shuttle are common in summer typhoon season; tracking means you are never charged because the plane was late.
Cancellation terms
