An airport on an island
Kansai International opened in 1994 on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, linked to the mainland at Rinku Town by the Sky Gate Bridge R, which carries both road and rail. That location means there is only one way in and out by car, so the chauffeur's timing matters, and strong winds occasionally restrict traffic on the bridge. Kansai is the main international gateway for Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara.

Terminal 1 was extensively renovated ahead of the Osaka Expo in 2025, with an enlarged international departures area. Terminal 2 is a simpler low-cost building a few minutes away by shuttle bus. Your flight number tells our system which terminal to expect.
Where the chauffeur waits
Curbside pickup at the area Kansai designates for pre-arranged and private cars outside the first-floor arrivals level is our standard service. Like other Japanese airports, KIX marks its pickup points with numbered stops, so once you have your bags the chauffeur can simply text you the stop number. The chauffeur does not wait inside by default. To be met at the arrivals exit with a name board, add meet and greet; add-ons are only available in selected locations.
Arrival formalities
Registering with Visit Japan Web before travel lets you complete immigration and customs details online and show QR codes on arrival, which can shorten the process. Many nationalities can enter Japan visa-free for short stays; check your own requirements before you fly. Immigration at Kansai can queue when several flights from China, Korea and Southeast Asia land together, so allow 30 to 70 minutes from touchdown to the car. The 60 free minutes start at the actual landing, then waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks.
Drive times from KIX
Japan drives on the left. The route crosses the Sky Gate Bridge and follows the Hanshin Expressway Wangan route or the Kinki Expressway.

Haruka, rapi:t or a car?
JR West's Haruka limited express runs to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, taking about 75 to 80 minutes to Kyoto, and Nankai's rapi:t reaches Namba in about 35 to 40 minutes. They are fast and frequent. The challenge is luggage: large suitcases can be awkward on crowded trains and through big stations like Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, and ryokan in Kyoto's Higashiyama or Arashiyama areas are some way from the stations. A car takes you to the entrance.
Which of the nine classes to book

Kyoto, Kobe and Nara from the airport
Kyoto is the most common onward destination, and a direct car avoids changing trains with luggage. Kobe is reached across the bay in about an hour, and Nara in 70 to 90 minutes. These longer drives are booked as fixed-fare intercity transfers. For sightseeing once you are settled, see city tours and day trips, with a three-hour minimum. Itami or Kansai?
Osaka's older airport, Itami, handles domestic flights only and is much closer to Umeda. If you are connecting from a Kansai international arrival to an Itami domestic flight, allow 60 to 80 minutes by car, plus check-in time.
Shinkansen connections
Travellers heading on to Tokyo, Hiroshima or Fukuoka often go straight from Kansai to Shin-Osaka Station, 55 to 75 minutes by car. The chauffeur drops you at the station entrance, and our Shin-Osaka page explains pickups for arrivals by train.
Typhoons, cherry blossoms and busy seasons
Typhoons between August and October can close the Sky Gate Bridge or suspend flights; flight tracking lets the chauffeur follow any delay. Cherry blossom season from late March to early April and the autumn leaf season in November are the busiest times in Kyoto, when roads and hotels fill, so book early. Golden Week in late April to early May and the Obon holidays in mid-August bring heavy domestic travel.
Fare and cancellation
Your Kansai fare covers the vehicle and chauffeur for the route, flight tracking and the included waiting. See rates for planning ranges. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
Late-night arrivals and departures
Kansai operates around the clock, and a number of flights from Southeast Asia and China land late at night or in the early morning, after the last trains to Osaka and Kyoto have left. A pre-booked car is the most reliable way into the city at those hours. For departures, remember that every car reaches the airport over the same bridge: from Kyoto, allow about three and a half hours before an international flight, and from Umeda or Namba about two and a half to three hours. The chauffeur drops you on the departures level of your terminal.
