Which Osaka airport are you flying into?
The first question for any Osaka booking is the airport, because the two are 60 km apart and serve different flights.
Kansai International (KIX)
Kansai International is built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, linked to the mainland by the Sky Gate Bridge R, a toll road and rail bridge. It handles almost all international flights to the Kansai region. Terminal 1, the long Renzo Piano building, was renovated in stages up to 2025 and serves full-service airlines. Terminal 2 is a separate low-cost terminal used by Peach and some other budget carriers, reached by a free shuttle bus.

Itami is the older airport, only about 15 km north of Umeda, and it serves domestic flights only: Tokyo Haneda, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa and other Japanese cities. Its renovated terminal places JAL and ANA in separate wings. Because the flights are domestic, the 30-minute included wait applies. Umeda is usually 20 to 35 minutes away by the Hanshin Expressway Ikeda Route, which makes Itami the fastest option for travellers arriving from elsewhere in Japan.
Kobe Airport, on another island near Sannomiya, mainly handles domestic flights and, since 2025, some international charters. If your ticket says UKB, enter Kobe Airport as the pickup.

Arriving in Japan
Visitors from many countries can enter Japan visa-free for short stays, often up to 90 days depending on the passport. The government's Visit Japan Web service lets you register immigration and customs details in advance and show QR codes at the airport, which speeds up the customs declaration. Japan passed a law in 2026 for a future electronic travel authorisation called JESTA, but it is not expected to start before the 2028 fiscal year, so it does not apply to trips now. Nationals who need a visa can check the eVisa options through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Immigration at KIX Terminal 1 can take from 20 minutes to over an hour when several long-haul flights arrive together.

Umeda, Namba and the business districts
Osaka is a city of two centres. Kita, around Osaka and Umeda stations, holds corporate offices, the new Grand Green Osaka park and towers of the Umekita redevelopment, department stores and the Kitashinchi dining quarter. Minami, around Namba and Shinsaibashi, is the shopping and nightlife side, with Dotonbori and Midosuji Avenue's flagship stores. Between them lie Nakanoshima, an island in the Dojima River with the Osaka International Convention Center (Grand Cube Osaka), museums and head offices, and Honmachi and Yodoyabashi, the traditional business district along Midosuji.
Further out are Tennoji and Abeno, home to the Abeno Harukas tower, the Osaka Castle area and the Osaka Business Park, and the Bay Area with Universal Studios Japan and the Tempozan district. Umeda to Namba is about 4 km and 15 to 30 minutes by car; Umeda to Universal Studios Japan about 25 to 40 minutes. Yumeshima, a reclaimed island in Osaka Bay, hosted Expo 2025 from April to October 2025. The site is now being redeveloped, with the planned integrated resort expected around 2030 and the Expo grounds partly repurposed. Access is by the Yumemai Bridge and the Yumeshima Tunnel, and the extended Osaka Metro Chuo Line reaches the island. For site visits, trade events or construction-sector meetings on the island, book the full address; Yumeshima is about 25 to 40 minutes from Umeda by the Hanshin Expressway Bay Route, and security rules at worksites may limit where cars can stop.

The Kyoto run follows the Meishin Expressway. In Kyoto itself, traffic around temples in the cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons can be slow, and some temple lanes are closed to cars, so the chauffeur drops you at the nearest permitted point. For Kobe, the Hanshin Expressway Kobe Route runs along the coast and is busy in both peaks. Many visitors fly into KIX and go straight to Kyoto by car, which avoids changing trains with suitcases. Ship passengers can arrange transfers from Osaka Port's Tempozan terminal or from the Kobe cruise terminals.
Shin-Osaka and the rail network
Shin-Osaka Station is the Shinkansen station for Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, about 4 km north of Umeda. Driving realities in Osaka
Japan drives on the left, and chauffeurs load passengers from the left kerb. Urban expressways are tolled and paid by ETC. Traffic on surface roads is heavy but orderly; the main slowdowns are on the Hanshin Expressway during the 7.30 to 9.30 am and 5 to 7.30 pm peaks and in the Golden Week, Obon (mid-August) and New Year holidays, when long-distance traffic builds. Street parking is scarce, so chauffeurs may wait at a coin car park nearby and return when you call.
