Naha Airport (OKA): terminals and pickup
OKA sits on the coast about 6 km south of central Naha, and since 2019 its domestic and international terminals have been joined into one building, so there is a single arrivals frontage with separate halls. Traffic and roads on Okinawa Island
Okinawa drives on the left. Route 58, the main west-coast road, is slow through Naha, Urasoe and Ginowan at rush hour, and many tourists hire their own cars, which adds to the congestion around the airport. The Okinawa Expressway, a toll road from Nishihara to Nago, saves time for longer runs to the north. Summer is also typhoon season, roughly July to October; when a storm approaches, flights and ships can be cancelled and the local operator may pause driving for safety. Keep your booking; if your flight changes, the pickup is re-timed through flight tracking.
Central Naha: where people stay and meet
Kokusai-dori, the long shopping street, is lined with hotels and restaurants, and the Makishi public market sits just behind it. Omoromachi, the newer district to the north, has shopping centres, the prefectural museum and more hotels. Shuri, in the hills to the east, is the old royal capital; the castle is being rebuilt after the 2019 fire. The Yui Rail monorail links the airport with these districts and runs on to Tedako-Uranishi, but a chauffeur is more practical with luggage or golf bags. The resort coast and the north
West-coast resort hotels line Onna Village and the Motobu Peninsula, including the Halekulani Okinawa, the Busena Terrace and the Ritz-Carlton Okinawa near Nago.
