Fukuoka Airport: close to town, two separate terminals
Fukuoka Airport lies on the eastern edge of the city, only about 3 km from Hakata Station. That proximity is the defining fact of travel here: a domestic arrival can be at a Hakata hotel in 15 minutes. What catches visitors out is that the domestic terminal and the international terminal are on opposite sides of the runways. The subway and most taxis serve the domestic side; the international terminal on the west side is reached by road, with a shuttle bus between the two taking around 15 minutes. A second runway opened in March 2025, mainly for international departures, and the international building was greatly enlarged.

Hakata, Tenjin, Nakasu and Momochi
The city has two centres. Hakata, around the station, is the rail and business hub, with Canal City Hakata and the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka close by. Tenjin, 2 to 3 km west, is the retail and office district, now being rebuilt under the Tenjin Big Bang redevelopment; The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka opened there in 2023. Between them, Nakasu is the river island famous for its evening yatai food stalls. Out west on the bay, Momochi has Fukuoka Tower, the Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk and the Mizuho PayPay Dome, home of the SoftBank Hawks.
Hakata Port: cruise ships and Busan ferries
Hakata Port is one of Japan's busiest ports for international cruise calls, with ships berthing at the Chuo Futo and Hakozaki piers. International ferries run to Busan in South Korea from the Hakata Port International Terminal. Cruise pickups follow the same rule as elsewhere: 15 minutes of included waiting from the booked time, then 15-minute blocks, so give us a realistic disembarkation time. Hakata Station and the Shinkansen
Hakata Station is the western end of the Sanyo Shinkansen, about 2.5 hours to Shin-Osaka and 5 hours to Tokyo, and the northern end of the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. Festivals and events by month
- 3 to 4 May: Hakata Dontaku, one of Japan's largest festivals by attendance, with parades through the centre.
- 1 to 15 July: Hakata Gion Yamakasa, ending with the Oiyama race before dawn on the 15th. Roads close in Hakata.
- September: Hojoya festival at Hakozaki Shrine.
- November: the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament at Fukuoka Kokusai Center, and the Fukuoka Marathon.

Day trips from Fukuoka
- Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine and the Kyushu National Museum, about 30 to 45 minutes away.
- Itoshima peninsula beaches and cafés, about 40 to 60 minutes west.
- Karatsu castle town in Saga, roughly 1 to 1.25 hours.
- Yufuin and Beppu hot-spring towns in Oita, about 2 hours.
- Kumamoto and its castle, about 1.5 to 2 hours by expressway.

Driving in Fukuoka
Cars keep to the left in Japan. The Fukuoka Urban Expressway loops the city and links the airport, Hakata, Tenjin and Momochi; the Kyushu Expressway heads south and east. Central streets around Tenjin and Hakata are congested at rush hours, and festival days bring closures.
Entry to Japan through Fukuoka
Fukuoka is a common first port of entry for travellers from South Korea, Taiwan and China. Short-term visitors from many countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, while others must apply in advance. Registering on Visit Japan Web before the flight speeds immigration and customs at FUK. Japan's departure tax is 3,000 yen per person from 1 July 2026. A future electronic travel authorisation, JESTA, has been announced but is not yet required. More at japan.travel.

Free cancellation more than 72 hours before pickup. From 72 hours out a 10% fee applies, rising to 50% from 48 hours and to the full fare from 24 hours or on a no-show. We track your flight, so a late landing into FUK is simply absorbed by the chauffeur's timing.
