New Chitose Airport (CTS)
New Chitose is Hokkaido's main gateway, in Chitose about 45 to 50 km south-east of Sapporo. The domestic terminal and the international terminal are separate buildings joined by an indoor walkway, and JR's New Chitose Airport Station sits beneath the domestic building. Winter times assume ordinary snowfall. A blizzard can close passes or expressway sections, and the chauffeur will take the open route, which may be longer. Your fare does not change.
Snow driving in Hokkaido: what actually happens
Hokkaido gets heavy, dry snow from roughly December to March, and Niseko is one of the snowiest resort areas in the world. A few realities:
- Winter tyres are standard. Hire cars in Hokkaido run studless winter tyres through the season, and most vehicles used for mountain routes are four-wheel drive.
- Speeds drop. Chauffeurs drive to the conditions, not the limit, especially on Route 276 through the mountains and over Nakayama Pass on Route 230.
- Whiteouts happen on open stretches near Chitose and on the coast; chauffeurs may pause at a roadside station (michi-no-eki) until visibility improves.
- Road information is published by the Hokkaido Regional Development Bureau and the expressway operator; your chauffeur checks it before departure.

Niseko, Rusutsu and the other resorts
Niseko United links four areas on Mount Annupuri: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri. Most international guests stay at Hirafu (see our Niseko page), where many lodges sit on narrow, steep lanes; your chauffeur drops at the door where the road allows it. Hanazono has the Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono, and Niseko Village has its own hotels by the gondola. Rusutsu, closer to CTS, is a large self-contained resort. Kiroro is a short run from Otaru and Sapporo, Furano sits in the centre of Hokkaido, and Tomamu is a resort complex on the expressway toward Obihiro. Vehicles for skiers and groups
Two skiers with board and ski bags fit an executive SUV. Sapporo's districts
Sapporo's grid is easy to read. Sapporo Station and the JR Tower sit at the north end of the centre, with the JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo above the station. Odori Park, a long green strip with the TV tower, divides the city, and Susukino to the south is the dining and nightlife district. Maruyama to the west has Hokkaido Jingu shrine and quieter residential streets, and Nakajima Park holds the Sapporo Park Hotel and a concert hall. Mount Moiwa's ropeway gives the classic night view.
Venues and the Snow Festival
The Sapporo Snow Festival is held every year in early February, with ice and snow sculptures at Odori Park, the Susukino ice site and the Tsudome site; hotels fill months ahead and central roads are busy. Other dates: the Yosakoi Soran dance festival in June, the summer festival and Odori beer gardens in July and August, the Hokkaido Marathon usually in late August, and the Sapporo Autumn Fest food festival in September. Rail and domestic air
JR Hokkaido's Rapid Airport train links CTS to Sapporo Station in about 40 minutes, and limited expresses run to Asahikawa, Hakodate and Kushiro; see jrhokkaido.co.jp. The Hokkaido Shinkansen reaches Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto; the extension to Sapporo is under construction and still years away. Okadama Airport in the city's north handles small domestic flights within Hokkaido.
Driving side and roads
Japan drives on the left. The Hokkaido Expressway runs from Chitose through Sapporo to Otaru and Asahikawa, and it is tolled. In winter, Sapporo's side streets narrow with banked snow, and parking is limited, so the chauffeur drops at the entrance and waits nearby.
Entering Japan through Hokkaido
Travellers flying into CTS from abroad clear immigration and customs in the international terminal. Visitors from many countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, the UK and most of Europe, can stay visa-free for up to 90 days; check whether that applies to your passport. Visit Japan Web lets you file your immigration and customs details ahead of time. From 1 July 2026 the departure tax is 3,000 yen, normally included in the airfare.

Cancellation rules
Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup: no charge. Within 72 hours: 10%. Within 48 hours: 50%. Within 24 hours or a no-show: 100%. A flight that is delayed or diverted by snow is tracked and is not treated as a no-show.
