Sangster International at a glance
MBJ sits on the coast just east of downtown Montego Bay and is Jamaica's busiest airport. It is operated by MBJ Airports Limited under a concession, and all passengers use one terminal. Immigration and customs on arrival
Jamaica's immigration and customs formalities are handled by the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency and Jamaica Customs. On a peak winter Saturday, with many flights from the US, Canada and the UK arriving between late morning and mid-afternoon, allow 45 to 90 minutes from landing to the exit. Jamaica drives on the left. The North Coast Highway is good but busy, and roads through towns slow down, particularly at school times. West of Montego Bay the coast road to Negril is narrower and winds through Hanover's villages, while east of the airport the highway is wider and faster towards Falmouth and Ocho Rios. Is there a train from Montego Bay airport?
No. Jamaica's passenger rail network no longer serves visitors, and there is no rail link to MBJ. Buses and route taxis serve locals but are not suited to resort arrivals with luggage. Getting back to Sangster for your flight
Most international departures from MBJ leave between late morning and late afternoon, and check-in queues build quickly on Saturdays and Sundays in winter. Aim to reach the terminal about three hours before an international flight. That means leaving Rose Hall or the Hip Strip around three and a half hours ahead, but Negril or Ocho Rios four and a half to five hours ahead, because of the length of the drive. Book the return with the arrival and the desk will set a pickup from your flight time. If you have a late flight after a noon check-out, the car can be booked by the hour for a stop in Montego Bay on the way.
When to visit western Jamaica
The winter season, from mid-December to April, is the busiest time on the north coast, with the most flights and the longest arrival lines. Summer brings events such as Reggae Sumfest, usually held in Montego Bay in July, and many families travel in the school holidays.
