Owen Roberts International Airport
GCM is on the edge of George Town, the capital, and is run by the Cayman Islands Airports Authority. It has a single passenger terminal, redeveloped and expanded in recent years, handling direct flights from the US, Canada and the UK as well as inter-island services to Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The Cayman Islands Airports Authority publishes flight times and terminal information. Arrival formalities: how long before you are out?
All international passengers clear Cayman Islands immigration and then customs, which is run by the islands' Customs and Border Control service. Carry your onward or return ticket and the address where you are staying. With one or two flights on the ground, many passengers are at the curb in 20 to 35 minutes. When several US flights land at once on a winter Saturday, it can take close to an hour. Government services and entry information are on the Cayman Islands Government portal.
Your included waiting on an international flight is 60 minutes from touchdown, which covers most arrivals. Past that point, each further 15 minutes is billed as a block. Inter-island flights from the Sister Islands include 30 minutes.
Where your chauffeur waits at GCM
Pickup is curbside at the area the airport assigns to pre-arranged transport, separate from the taxi dispatch stand. Taxi fares in Cayman are regulated, and taxis are dispatched in turn at the rank, which is why a pre-booked car has its own place to wait. The chauffeur messages you with the meeting point when your flight lands.

The Cayman Islands drive on the left. The Esterley Tibbetts Highway and West Bay Road carry most Seven Mile Beach traffic, and the roundabouts around George Town back up at weekday rush hours. Visitors are often surprised by how much traffic a small island can have: commuters from Bodden Town and the eastern districts drive into George Town each morning, and the reverse flow builds from about 16:30. The Linford Pierson Highway helps, but the approach to the airport is still slow at the peaks, which is worth remembering when you book the ride back for an afternoon flight.
Rail and public transport on Grand Cayman
There is no railway on the island. Public minibuses run on set routes between George Town, West Bay and the eastern districts, but they are not designed for arriving luggage. Visitors use the airport taxi rank, rental cars or a car booked in advance. Only the last gives you a fixed price and a named chauffeur before you land.

Departing Grand Cayman
There is no US preclearance at GCM, so passengers to the United States clear US immigration on arrival at their destination airport. Allow two to three hours at Owen Roberts before an international departure, more on winter Saturdays when many US flights leave within a few hours of each other. Because drives on the island are short, most hotels on Seven Mile Beach need only a 15 to 25 minute margin for the road, but East End and Rum Point guests should leave 45 minutes to an hour for the drive alone. Book the return with your arrival; the desk sets the pickup from your flight time.
Seasons and events on Grand Cayman
The busiest season runs from mid-December to April, when weather is dry and cruise and flight schedules are heaviest. Batabano, the islands' carnival, is usually held in May, and Pirates Week, a festival with parades and fireworks, usually takes place in November. Storm season in the Atlantic officially spans June to November. During major events, roads around George Town close for parades, and the desk will allow for it in suggested pickup times.
