Which airport for Destin and 30A?
- Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS): the closest, about 16 miles northwest of Destin at Eglin Air Force Base, typically 25 to 40 minutes. Destin, Sandestin and the 30A towns
Destin sits on a narrow strip between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf, with the Destin Harbor Boardwalk and HarborWalk Village at the western end by East Pass. Crab Island, the sandbar just inside the pass, is a summer gathering spot reached by boat. Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach lie west across the Marler Bridge. East along US-98 are Holiday Isle, Henderson Beach State Park, the Henderson Beach Resort, Miramar Beach and the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, which includes the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa and the Village of Baytowne Wharf. Further east, Scenic Highway 30A links the planned beach towns of Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach, a favourite for weddings and family holidays. Getting around Destin on a summer day
In June, July and on spring break weeks, a trip of a few miles along US-98 can take far longer than the map suggests, and parking at the harbour, the public beach accesses and Baytowne Wharf is scarce. Guests often book a car for a harbour dinner, a morning charter departure from the docks or a round of golf at Kelly Plantation or Regatta Bay, and let the chauffeur deal with the traffic and the drop-off. Charter captains usually ask passengers to arrive 15 to 30 minutes before departure; give the dock name and slip when you book so the chauffeur drops at the right end of the harbour.

Driving realities
Driving is on the right. US-98 is the only main road through Destin and it slows badly on summer weekends and during spring break. The tolled Mid-Bay Bridge and its connector road give a bypass from the north toward Niceville and I-10. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine in summer, and hurricane season runs June to November. There is no passenger rail on this stretch of coast.
