GYE airport: close to everything
Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International sits inside the city, only about 5 km north of the Malecon, which makes Guayaquil one of the quickest airport-to-hotel runs in South America. The single terminal handles international and domestic flights, including the Galapagos routes. After immigration and customs, standard pickup is curbside at the pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals, and the chauffeur messages the spot and plate. Neighbourhoods and business areas
The centre runs along the Guayas River, with the Malecon Simon Bolivar (Malecon 2000) promenade, the civic buildings and the older hotels such as the Hilton Colon on the north side and the Oro Verde. Las Penas and the Cerro Santa Ana stairs rise at the northern end, and Puerto Santa Ana beside them has newer towers and hotels. Kennedy and Urdesa hold offices, shopping centres and restaurants close to the airport. Across the Daule River by the Rafael Mendoza Aviles bridge, Samborondon is where many executives live and where gated communities, malls and corporate offices cluster. Via a la Costa runs west toward the Pacific towns.
The seaports and crew changes
Guayaquil is Ecuador's main cargo gateway. Ships work the terminals along the estuary south of the city, and the deep-water port at Posorja, near the mouth of the Gulf of Guayaquil, is roughly two hours' drive away. Seafarers joining or leaving vessels are a regular part of the city's ground transport, usually timed around a GYE flight and a hotel night. Galapagos flights from GYE
Guayaquil has the shortest mainland flights to Baltra and San Cristobal, about 1 hour 45 minutes. Travellers buy the transit control card at the airport before check-in and pay the national park fee on arrival, and travel health insurance is required for the islands; see the Galapagos government site. A hotel-to-GYE run for an early departure rarely takes more than 25 minutes.
Events and holidays by month
- February or March: Carnival, when coastal roads to Salinas and Playas fill up.
- July: the Fiestas Julianas around the city's founding on 25 July and Simon Bolivar's birthday on 24 July.
- 9 October: Guayaquil's independence day, with parades on the Malecon.
- Football season: Barcelona SC at the Estadio Monumental and Emelec at the George Capwell draw big crowds; allow extra time on match nights.

Climate and road conditions
Guayaquil is hot and at sea level, a contrast with Quito. The rainy season, roughly January to April, brings heavy downpours and short-lived street flooding. Ecuador drives on the right. Traffic peaks on the bridges to Samborondon and on Avenida de las Americas at commuter hours. The road to Cuenca climbs through El Cajas National Park, past 4,000 m, with fog and bends, so it deserves an SUV and daylight; book it as an intercity transfer.
Security, stated plainly
The US State Department's August 2026 advisory keeps Ecuador at Level 2, but rates parts of Guayaquil higher: Level 4, do not travel, for the Nueva Prosperina and Pascuales districts and areas south of Avenida Portete de Tarqui, and Level 3 for the rest of the city. Pre-booked cars, direct routes and daytime intercity drives are the usual pattern. Armoured SUVs and sedans are available on request after a risk assessment, through secure transportation.
Vehicles
A Standard Sedan covers airport and office runs. An executive SUV is the default for executives in Guayaquil, for luggage and for the Cuenca road. Entry to Ecuador
Most US, Canadian, UK and EU passport holders can visit for up to 90 days in a 12-month period without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and since July 2025 arrivals complete a free online customs registration form.
