Two airports, and which one you are actually using
Punta del Este has its own airport, Capitan de Corbeta Carlos A. Curbelo International at Laguna del Sauce (PDP), about 20 km west of the Peninsula in Maldonado department. Scheduled service is limited and strongly seasonal, mainly from Buenos Aires in the summer, and the airport is busiest with private jets in late December and January. Most long-haul visitors instead land at Carrasco International in Montevideo (MVD) and drive about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. Book either with the flight number, and the chauffeur is timed to the actual landing.
Pickup at Laguna del Sauce and at Carrasco
At both airports, standard pickup is curbside at the pre-arranged pickup area outside arrivals, and the chauffeur sends the spot and plate. A name-board meet and greet inside the hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations. Waiting included from landing: 60 minutes on international arrivals, 30 minutes on domestic, then 15-minute blocks. The Peninsula, the beaches and the towns to the east
The Peninsula is the original town, with the port, the lighthouse and Avenida Gorlero. Two shorelines meet there: the calm Playa Mansa on the bay side and the surf of Playa Brava, where the hand sculpture Los Dedos rises from the sand. West lies Punta Ballena with Casapueblo, Carlos Paez Vilaro's white hillside building. East, across the wavy Leonel Viera bridge over the Arroyo Maldonado, La Barra has the nightlife and galleries, then Manantiales and its beach Bikini, and finally Jose Ignacio, the lighthouse village that draws much of the high-end summer crowd. Hotels include the Enjoy Punta del Este on Playa Mansa, the Fasano Las Piedras above La Barra, and Playa Vik and Bahia Vik in Jose Ignacio.
Cruise passengers: coming ashore by tender
Punta del Este is a tender port. Ships anchor in the bay, mostly between November and March, and launches carry passengers to the pier at the Port of Punta del Este on the tip of the Peninsula. The chauffeur meets you at the pickup point by the port once you step off, with 15 minutes of waiting included. Tender schedules depend on wind and swell, so a booked tour by the hour gives the most flexibility; ask the ship for the last tender back and build in a margin. See cruise lines and ports.
The summer season: when to book
The season runs from Christmas to Carnival, with the peak in the first half of January, when Argentine, Brazilian and Uruguayan visitors fill the coast. Traffic on the Ruta 10 coastal road to La Barra and Jose Ignacio can crawl at sunset and after midnight when restaurants and parties empty. Vehicles are committed early, so book as soon as flights are confirmed. The January calendar usually includes art fairs, polo and jazz concerts in the countryside behind La Barra, and Holy Week (Semana de Turismo) brings a short second peak. The rest of the year the town is quiet, and many restaurants close. Current dates are on the Uruguay tourism board site and the Maldonado government site.
Hourly cars for a Punta del Este evening
Dinner in Jose Ignacio, a party in La Barra and a late return to the Peninsula is a typical night, and driving it yourself is the least relaxing option. The hourly chauffeur service keeps a car and chauffeur with you, parked nearby, for as long as you book. The same works for a wedding at an estancia or a vineyard day in Garzon, with event transportation for multi-car plans.
Vehicles for the coast
A Standard Sedan covers airport runs for two. An executive SUV is the most requested class for families with beach luggage and for sandy access roads in Jose Ignacio. Driving and road notes
Uruguay drives on the right. The Ruta Interbalnearia from Montevideo is a divided highway with electronic tolls. Ruta 10 east of La Barra is two-lane and busy in January, and some Jose Ignacio lanes are unpaved. Speed cameras are common on the approach roads.
Arriving in Uruguay
Most US, Canadian, UK and EU passport holders visit Uruguay without a visa, usually for up to 90 days. Visitors arriving by private jet clear immigration and customs at Laguna del Sauce. Uruguay is generally calm, but check your government's advice, such as the US travel advisory, before travel.
Linking Punta del Este with other cities
