Which trains use Beijing South?
Beijing South opened in 2008 as the city's first purpose-built high-speed station and is run by China Railway.
- Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line: Fuxing trains to Shanghai Hongqiao, the fastest taking about 4 h 20, with stops at Jinan, Nanjing and elsewhere.
- Beijing-Tianjin intercity railway: frequent trains to Tianjin in about 30 minutes, continuing to Tianjin's Binhai area.
- High-speed services to Qingdao, Hangzhou, Hefei, Fuzhou and other cities in the east and south.
- Beijing Subway Lines 4 and 14 beneath the station.
Tickets are issued in the passenger's name and checked against the passport at the gates, so keep yours to hand. Trains to the north-east and north-west of China often use Beijing, Beijing West, Beijing North or Beijing Chaoyang stations instead, so check your ticket.
Leaving the station and meeting the car
The station is a large oval building. Departures use the elevated upper level, where cars drop off. Arriving passengers go down, not up: platforms lead to the lower concourse, where the exits split towards the subway, the taxi stands and the underground car parks. Pre-booked private cars pick up in designated areas on the lower levels rather than on the departures ramp. Curbside meeting as standard

Hotels and business districts
Most visiting executives stay in the CBD around Guomao, home to the China World towers and hotels such as the China World Summit Wing and the Park Hyatt, or near Wangfujing, where the Peninsula and the Waldorf Astoria are. Financial Street, in the west, holds the regulators and the big state banks. Embassies are in the Sanlitun and Liangmaqiao areas. Big congresses use the China National Convention Center at the Olympic Green.
Driving in Beijing
Beijing controls traffic with rules on licence-plate tail numbers on weekdays within the Fifth Ring Road and with permits for vehicles registered outside the city. Local operators work within these rules; your fixed fare already accounts for the route. Driving is on the right. Major political meetings, such as the national sessions in early March, can bring road closures around Tiananmen and Chang'an Avenue.
Intercity alternatives by car
A car is the easiest way to the Great Wall. The Mutianyu section is about 1 h 30 to 2 hours from Beijing South, and Badaling around 1 h 30; Jinshanling and Simatai about 2 h 30 to 3 hours. The Ming Tombs are about 1 h 15. Tianjin is about 130 km and 1 h 45 to 2 hours by road, though the 30-minute train is faster. Chengde's mountain resort is about 3 hours.
