Two details help a Beijing booking. First, give the address in Chinese characters if you have it, or the hotel's official name; many towers have similar English names. At Beijing Capital, Terminal 3 is a very long building split into T3-C, T3-D and T3-E, and your confirmation tells you which door and level to use for the pickup area. Terminal 2 handles a different group of airlines, so check the terminal on your ticket before you land. Capital is the natural choice for Chaoyang, Wangjing, Sanlitun, the embassy district and the exhibition grounds in Shunyi.

Beijing Daxing opened in 2019 and has grown into the base for several Chinese and foreign carriers. It suits Yizhuang, Fengtai, Beijing South Railway Station and trips toward Tianjin or Xiong'an. The Daxing Airport Expressway runs almost straight north to the Fourth and Third Ring Roads.

Plate-number rules: what they mean for your car

Beijing restricts driving by the last digit of the licence plate. On working days from 7:00 to 20:00, cars whose plates end in the two digits assigned to that weekday may not drive inside the Fifth Ring Road (the Fifth Ring itself is outside the zone). The digit pairs rotate roughly every 13 weeks, and the city publishes each new schedule on its official English portal. A plate ending in a letter counts as zero, and new-energy vehicles with green plates are exempt from the tail-number rule.

Cars registered outside Beijing face tighter limits. They need an entry permit, and even with one they are kept off roads inside the Fifth Ring (including the ring road) during the morning and evening peaks. That is one reason trips here are assigned to Beijing-registered affiliate vehicles.

People often call the system "odd-even", but the true odd-and-even rule, where half of all plates stay home on alternate days, is used only as an emergency measure during a red air-pollution alert. Which vehicle class works in Beijing?

Beijing distances are long and traffic comes in waves, so comfort matters more than size on most trips. From the fleet:

• Standard Sedan: one or two travellers between Capital Airport and the CBD.
• Luxury Executive Sedan: senior executives moving between Financial Street and ministry meetings.
• Executive SUV: families with large cases, or winter trips out to the Great Wall.
• Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van: delegations of up to about a dozen arriving on one flight.
• Minicoach or motorcoach: conference shuttles to the China National Convention Center, planned by a coordinator and confirmed in writing.
• Armoured SUV or sedan (partner): only on request and after a risk assessment, through secure transportation.

Every affiliate vehicle is four model years old or younger; Rolls-Royce, Maybach and Bentley are accepted up to seven years.

Business districts and drive times from the airports

Beijing's corporate map has several separate centres, and each has its own best airport.

• Chaoyang CBD (Guomao): China World Trade Center, the CITIC Tower and most multinational regional offices. 35-70 minutes from Capital, 55-90 from Daxing.
• Financial Street, Xicheng: the central bank, the big state banks and regulators. Allow 45-80 minutes from Capital.
• Zhongguancun, Haidian: technology companies and the university district. The drive from Capital runs 45-90 minutes via the airport expressway and the North Fourth Ring.
• Wangjing: tech headquarters close to Capital Airport, often 25-40 minutes away.
• Yizhuang (Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area): manufacturing and life sciences, 35-60 minutes from Daxing.
• Sanlitun and Liangmaqiao: embassies, the diplomatic compounds and nightlife, 30-50 minutes from Capital.

Hotels, venues and convention traffic

• Around 1 May and the first week of October: Labour Day and National Day holidays, with heavy traffic to the Great Wall and very busy airports.
• September: the China International Fair for Trade in Services is usually held at the Shougang Park site and the convention center.
• Autumn: the Beijing Marathon, usually in October or November, closes central roads for a morning.

Rail stations and intercity trips from Beijing

Beijing has several major rail stations, and they are far apart. Beijing South Railway Station serves the high-speed line to Tianjin and Shanghai; the fastest trains reach Shanghai Hongqiao in about four and a half hours. Beijing West handles lines to Xi'an, Wuhan and Guangzhou, the older Beijing Railway Station sits near Dongcheng, Beijing North serves the line to Zhangjiakou, and Beijing Chaoyang serves the north-east. Arriving in China: entry rules and arrival timing

China's entry rules have loosened since late 2024. Passport holders of a large group of countries, including much of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea, can currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days, a policy that runs to at least the end of 2026. Nationals of 57 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, can use 240-hour visa-free transit when continuing to a third country, and both Beijing airports are among the eligible ports. Other visitors need a visa before departure. Check the National Immigration Administration site for your passport before booking a flight.

Immigration queues at Capital T3 and Daxing can be long when several wide-bodies arrive together, which is why the 60-minute included wait starts at actual landing.

Private jets and business aviation in Beijing

Most business aircraft use Beijing Capital, which has a dedicated business aviation terminal on the airport grounds, separate from T2 and T3. Some flights now use Daxing as well. Driving realities: ring roads, weather and payment

China drives on the right. The city is organised around ring roads from the Second to the Sixth, crossed by expressways radiating out; rush hours run roughly 7:00-9:30 and 17:00-20:00, and the Third and Fourth Rings slow sharply at those times. Heavy snow or dense smog can close expressways briefly, and the chauffeur will reroute.
