Gaoqi International Airport (XMN): terminals and where you are collected
Xiamen Gaoqi sits on the north side of Xiamen Island in Huli District, only 10 to 12 km from the old centre, which makes it one of the closest major airports to a Chinese city core. Terminal 3 handles international, regional and many domestic flights; Terminal 4 is used mainly by domestic Xiamen Airlines services. Check your ticket, because the two buildings are not a short walk apart.
Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged car pickup area outside arrivals, following airport signage. Your chauffeur sends the exact lane or car park level once you land. A name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. Every airport pickup is flight-tracked, so timing follows the real landing. Cruise passengers and the Gulangyu ferry
The Xiamen International Cruise Center at Dongdu, on the west side of the island, is the city's cruise port and also the departure point for most visitor ferries to Gulangyu, the car-free UNESCO World Heritage island of colonial villas and piano museums. On a cruise day the chauffeur drops at the terminal forecourt and meets disembarking passengers at the designated pickup area once you have cleared immigration and collected luggage. Gulangyu itself allows no private cars at all, so the practical plan is a drop at the ferry hall, a timed return and a pickup when your boat lands. Districts, hotels and the exhibition centre
Siming District holds the historic arcade streets around Zhongshan Road, Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple, and the long seafront drive of Huandao Road. Huli covers the airport, the Wuyuan Bay waterfront and the free trade zone. Across the water, Haicang is an industrial and port district, Jimei holds the university town and the north railway station, and Xiang'an is the growth area around the new airport.
Business hotels cluster near the Shimao Straits towers and Lujiang Road, including the Conrad Xiamen, with resort-style hotels along Huandao Road. The Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Center on the east coast of the island hosts the China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT), held every September. During that week hotel porte-cochères are congested, so we stage cars nearby and the chauffeur messages the pickup point. A day of meetings between the exhibition centre, a Haicang factory and dinner in Siming suits the hourly chauffeur service.

Which vehicle should you book?

Intercity trips from Xiamen
Xiamen is the southern anchor of Fujian's coast. Common one-way transfers go to Quanzhou (about 100 km), Zhangzhou and the Tulou earth-building villages of Nanjing and Yongding counties, a 2.5 to 3.5 hour drive inland. Fuzhou is about 280 km by road; many travellers take the high-speed train from Xiamen North instead, and we meet them at the station. For longer journeys see intercity transfers. Driving in Xiamen
China drives on the right. Foreign visitors cannot drive on an International Driving Permit, since China does not recognise it; a temporary Chinese licence is required. That is one reason visitors book a car with a chauffeur. Speed cameras are everywhere, the bridges and tunnels carry the bulk of cross-water traffic, and summer typhoons, usually between July and September, can close ferries and slow the roads for a day. If your flight or ship is disrupted, the chauffeur's timing moves with it.
Visa and arrival notes for Xiamen
Xiamen Gaoqi and Xiamen's seaport are designated ports for China's 240-hour visa-free transit, which lets eligible nationals travelling onward to a third country stay up to 10 days within the permitted provinces. In addition, China's unilateral visa-free entry of up to 30 days applies to ordinary passport holders of a list of countries and has been extended to 31 December 2026. Rules and country lists change, so confirm on the National Immigration Administration site before you fly.
