Tianfu or Shuangliu: check your ticket first

Chengdu has two major airports, and the first thing to confirm is which one your flight uses.

• Chengdu Tianfu International (TFU) opened in June 2021 in Jianyang, roughly 50 km southeast of Tianfu Square. It has two terminals, T1 and T2, and handles most international flights. The drive to the city centre typically takes 50 to 75 minutes, and Metro Line 18 links it with the south of the city.
• Chengdu Shuangliu International (CTU) is about 16 km southwest of the centre, with T1 and T2, and carries mainly domestic traffic. The drive to the centre is usually 30 to 45 minutes.

The two airports are more than 60 km apart, typically 60 to 90 minutes by road, so a wrong airport on a booking costs real time. How pickup works at Chengdu's airports

Standard pickup is curbside at the airport's designated pre-arranged or ride-hailing pickup area, usually reached from the arrivals level; the chauffeur sends the exact spot once you land. Meet and greet in arrivals with a name board is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations. All airport pickups are flight-tracked. Included waiting is 60 minutes on international arrivals, which covers immigration and baggage, and 30 minutes on domestic flights, then 15-minute blocks.

Business districts and where visitors stay

The historic centre around Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road has department stores and Taikoo Li, the low-rise shopping district next to Daci Temple, where The Temple House hotel sits. The Hi-Tech Zone to the south holds offices, research parks and the Century City New International Convention and Exhibition Center. Further south, Tianfu New Area is a planned district with the Western China International Expo City. Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuanzhai Xiangzi) and Jinli Street draw visitors to restored Qing-era lanes. Hotels such as the Niccolo Chengdu and the Waldorf Astoria Chengdu are central choices for executives, and an hourly chauffeur keeps the car with you between factory visits and dinners.

Rail stations and intercity travel

Chengdu East is the main high-speed station, with trains to Chongqing in about 1 to 1.5 hours and to Xi'an in roughly 3 to 4 hours. Chengdu South, Chengdu West and Tianfu station also carry high-speed services. Chauffeurs meet trains at each station's designated pickup area. Tickets and timetables are on China Railway 12306. By road, Chongqing is about 300 km and 3.5 to 4 hours, bookable as an intercity transfer.

Events and seasons

The China Food and Drinks Fair, known as the Sugar and Wine Fair, fills Chengdu's hotels, usually in March, and again in some years in autumn. Spring and autumn are the pleasant seasons; summers are hot and humid, and winters grey and damp. National holidays, especially the first week of October and the Spring Festival, bring heavy traffic to Leshan, Emei and the panda base, so book early and start day trips at opening time.

Entering China: visa-free travel as of 2026

China's entry rules have eased since late 2024. Passport holders from a large group of countries, including much of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea, can currently enter visa-free for up to 30 days, under arrangements running to at least the end of 2026. Nationals of 57 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, can use the 240-hour visa-free transit policy if they arrive from one country and fly on to a third; both Chengdu airports are designated ports, and Sichuan is among the participating provinces. Everyone else needs a visa before departure. Check the National Immigration Administration for your passport.

Driving realities in Sichuan

China drives on the right. Foreign driving licences are not valid without a Chinese licence, so a chauffeured car is the practical way to move with luggage or a busy schedule. Ring roads and elevated expressways carry most cross-city traffic, which slows sharply at rush hour. Chauffeurs use local navigation apps and know the drop-off lanes at the big exhibition centres.

Day trips: pandas, Leshan, Emei and Dujiangyan

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, north of the centre, opens early and the pandas are most active in the morning, so a pickup around 7:00 helps. Leshan, with the 71 m Giant Buddha carved into a cliff above the rivers, and Mount Emei, a Buddhist mountain with cable cars to the Golden Summit, are both about 2 to 2.5 hours south and are often combined over two days with a night at Emei. Dujiangyan, the ancient irrigation system, and Mount Qingcheng lie about an hour to the northwest. For these longer days, book an hourly chauffeur or ask for city tours and day trips. The chauffeur waits while you visit, and fuel is part of the fixed fare.
