Qingdao's new airport changed the transfer: what to know first
Anyone who flew to Qingdao before August 2021 remembers Liuting, close to the city. That airport closed when Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport opened in Jiaozhou, well to the northwest. Transfers are now longer: about 40 to 50 km to May Fourth Square, typically 45 to 70 minutes. Booking ahead makes sense, and the fare is fixed whatever the expressway traffic does.

Pickup at Jiaodong International Airport (TAO)
Jiaodong has a single large terminal with a starfish-shaped layout handling both domestic and international flights. Standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged car pickup area at arrivals level or in the ground transportation centre, as signed; the chauffeur messages the exact spot after landing. Across Jiaozhou Bay, the West Coast New Area (Huangdao) hosts heavy industry, the port and the film studios of Oriental Movie Metropolis, linked by the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge and the undersea Jiaozhou Bay Tunnel.

The Qingdao International Beer Festival and other dates

Rail stations and intercity links
Qingdao station is the historic terminus in the old town, near the cruise terminal. Qingdao North in Licang is the main high-speed hub, with trains to Jinan in about 1.5 to 2 hours and to Beijing in roughly 3 to 4 hours. Qingdao West serves the West Coast. Driving in Qingdao
Traffic is on the right. China does not accept International Driving Permits, so visiting drivers need a temporary Chinese licence, which is why most visitors use a chauffeur. The old town's streets are hilly, narrow and partly one-way, and the chauffeur may stop at the nearest legal point rather than at a hotel door. Sea fog is common in spring and early summer and can slow the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge. Winters are cold and windy but snow rarely lasts.
Entry rules for arrivals
Jiaodong airport and the Qingdao seaport are designated ports for the 240-hour visa-free transit for eligible nationals continuing to a third country. Separately, China's unilateral 30-day visa-free entry for ordinary passport holders of listed countries runs until 31 December 2026. Confirm what applies to you with the National Immigration Administration. Arrivals from South Korea and Japan are frequent, and Qingdao's international hall can be busy in the evening wave.
