Arriving at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX)
Bao'an International Airport lies on the Pearl River estuary in the west of the city. Terminal 3, the large honeycomb-roofed building, handles domestic and international flights, and a satellite concourse connected to it serves many gates, so allow extra walking time from a satellite stand. The Guangshen Coastal Expressway and the Beihuan (North Ring) Road carry most airport traffic. Weekday peaks run roughly 07:30 to 09:30 and 17:30 to 20:00, and the Futian approach is the slowest part of the trip.
Crossing to and from Hong Kong
Shenzhen's position on the Hong Kong border shapes most itineraries. Ordinary cars cannot cross: only vehicles with Guangdong and Hong Kong dual permits, issued under quotas, may use the road ports. For most travellers, the practical pattern is a car to a checkpoint, a walk through both immigration halls, and a second car on the far side. The high-speed rail is another option: Futian and Shenzhen North stations connect to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, with immigration for both sides inside the Hong Kong terminus. Futian, Nanshan and the other districts
Futian is the administrative and financial centre, with the Civic Center, Ping An Finance Centre, the Futian CBD grid and the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. Hotels such as The Ritz-Carlton Shenzhen and Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen are here, a short run from Futian high-speed station. Nanshan is the technology district: the Science and Technology Park, Houhai's new towers, Shenzhen Bay's waterfront, Shekou's restaurants and the cruise terminal. Qianhai, a reclaimed zone between Nanshan and Bao'an, holds offices and free-trade-zone companies. Luohu is the older commercial core by the Luohu checkpoint and Shenzhen Station. Bao'an combines the airport, factories and the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center, and Longgang and Longhua to the north and east are industrial and residential, with Shenzhen North Station in Longhua.

Which vehicle fits a Shenzhen trip?

Shenzhen World is 10 to 25 minutes from the airport but can be 60 to 90 minutes from Futian at show-opening time. Delegates staying in Futian often save time with a fixed daily car booked the night before. Organisers can plan shuttles through event transportation.
Rail stations and cruise terminals
Shenzhen North in Longhua is the main high-speed hub for Guangzhou, Changsha, Wuhan and Beijing. Futian Station sits underground beneath the CBD and serves Hong Kong West Kowloon and Guangzhou South. Shenzhen Station in Luohu handles conventional services next to the Luohu checkpoint, and Shenzhen East serves eastern routes. Shenzhen Airport station links to intercity lines. Intercity trips from Shenzhen
- Guangzhou: about 140 km to Tianhe, typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours by expressway; see Guangzhou.
- Dongguan: 40-70 km to its main manufacturing towns, usually 45 to 90 minutes.
- Huizhou: 80-100 km to the east, around 1.5 to 2 hours.
- Zhongshan: via the Shenzhen-Zhongshan link across the estuary, about an hour from Bao'an to central Zhongshan.
- Macau and Zhuhai: by ferry from Shekou, or by road via Zhongshan; see Macau.

Driving in Shenzhen: rules worth knowing
Mainland China drives on the right. Shenzhen enforces traffic rules with dense camera coverage, so chauffeurs stop only in legal bays; at busy towers you may be asked to walk to a designated pickup point. The city restricts non-Shenzhen-plated vehicles on many roads at weekday peak hours, which is one reason local affiliates with local plates do the driving. Expressway tolls are collected electronically. During typhoon warnings, usually between June and October, the city can close parks, schools and some roads; if a black rainstorm or high typhoon signal is raised, the trip may be moved for safety.
Entry rules for arrivals in 2026
To enter mainland China at Shenzhen you need a Chinese visa unless your nationality qualifies for an exemption. As of 2026, citizens of a list of more than 40 countries, largely in Europe plus Australia, New Zealand and others, can stay up to 30 days visa-free under unilateral arrangements that currently run to 31 December 2026. Nationals of 57 countries, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, can use the 240-hour visa-free transit if they arrive from one country and leave for a third country or region, which for this scheme includes Hong Kong and Macau.
