The crossing itself is about 55 km including link roads and usually takes 40 to 50 minutes of driving. Because vehicles cannot freely cross, intercity trips from Macau are usually planned as a walk-through at a land port plus a mainland car. Typical journeys:
- Zhuhai city and Gongbei: minutes beyond the Border Gate; allow 30-60 minutes for the crossing itself.
- Hengqin: 10-15 minutes by car to Hengqin Port, then short mainland transfers to the resorts and offices of the Guangdong-Macao cooperation zone.

Macau drives on the left, like Hong Kong.
