Terminal A, Terminal B and the central building
OR Tambo, operated by Airports Company South Africa, is the continent's busiest hub. Terminal A handles international flights, Terminal B handles domestic flights, and a central terminal building with shops and the Gautrain station links the two. Walking between them takes 5 to 10 minutes indoors.
- Terminal A (international): long-haul flights from Europe, the Gulf and Asia and regional flights to southern and East Africa.
- Terminal B (domestic): flights to Cape Town, Durban, George, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) and other South African cities.

Where the chauffeur will collect you
Standard pickup is at the area ACSA assigns to pre-arranged and chauffeur vehicles, which at OR Tambo is typically in or beside the multistorey parkades opposite the terminals rather than at the departures kerb. How long will immigration and customs take at JNB?
Passport control in Terminal A usually takes 20 to 45 minutes. Early-morning arrivals between 5 and 8 am, when many European and Gulf overnight flights land together, often take longer. Many nationalities enter South Africa visa-free; rules are published by the Department of Home Affairs. Bags arrive in 15 to 30 minutes, and customs is usually quick for travellers with nothing to declare.
International arrivals include 60 minutes of free waiting from actual landing; domestic arrivals 30 minutes. Beyond that, time is billed in 15-minute blocks.

The airport is in Kempton Park on the East Rand. The R24 and N12 link to the N3 and the Ben Schoeman Highway (N1), which carry most transfers. Gauteng's e-toll gantries were switched off in 2024.

Hotels, districts and venues served from JNB
Most OR Tambo transfers finish in the northern suburbs. Sandton holds the Nelson Mandela Square hotels, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Sandton Convention Centre. Rosebank has a cluster of boutique and business hotels around the Keyes Art Mile. Melrose Arch is a gated mixed-use precinct with its own hotel and restaurants. Midrand is home to the Gallagher Convention Centre and the Mall of Africa at Waterfall City. South of the centre, Nasrec hosts the Johannesburg Expo Centre and FNB Stadium, used for major concerts and football. For Pretoria, the embassy district in Arcadia and Brooklyn and the Menlyn Maine business area are the most common drops. Give the full building or hotel name in the booking, because many estates and office parks have controlled gates some distance from reception.
Is the Gautrain faster than a car?
It can be. The Gautrain rapid rail runs from the station at the central terminal to Sandton in about 15 minutes, with connections to Rosebank, Park Station and, via Marlboro, Pretoria. It is quick and predictable in rush hour, but the last stretch from Sandton station to a hotel or office still needs a car, and it is less practical with several large cases, children or late-night arrivals. If you take the train into Sandton, a car can meet you at your destination address instead.
