OR Tambo International: terminals and pickup
OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Kempton Park, operated by Airports Company South Africa, is the busiest airport in Africa by passenger numbers and the main long-haul gateway to South Africa. Terminal A handles international flights and Terminal B domestic flights, linked by a central walkway and the retail area, with the Gautrain station and the multi-storey parkades across the road. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pick-up area for pre-arranged transport, and the confirmation gives the exact zone for your terminal. Lanseria: the quieter airport north-west of Sandton
Lanseria International Airport (HLA) serves domestic routes and a smaller number of regional flights, and it is a major base for business aviation. It is about 40 km from Sandton, usually 30 to 50 minutes via the N14 or William Nicol Drive. For private aircraft, the ExecuJet facility is covered on our Lanseria FBO page; give the tail number and the chauffeur meets at the FBO, subject to its ramp rules. Lanseria is also the closer airport for the Cradle of Humankind and for trips west towards Hartbeespoort and Sun City.
Gautrain or a chauffeur: which makes sense?
The Gautrain airport link runs from OR Tambo to Sandton in about 15 minutes, with trains roughly every 12 to 20 minutes, and connects with the north-south line to Rosebank, Park Station, Midrand, Centurion and Pretoria. For a solo traveller with a small bag heading to a hotel next to Sandton station, it is fast and sensible.
A chauffeur makes more sense when:
- You have more than one large case, or you are travelling with children.
- Your destination is not beside a station, such as Hyde Park, Bryanston, Fourways or Waterfall.
- You arrive late at night, when trains are less frequent and the last leg from a station still needs a car.

Sandton, Rosebank and the business districts
Sandton is Johannesburg's financial centre: the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the headquarters of the major banks, the Sandton Convention Centre and hotels around Nelson Mandela Square. Rosebank, about 5 km south, mixes offices, galleries and hotels around its Gautrain station. Melrose Arch is a gated mixed-use precinct off the M1. The CBD and Braamfontein hold government offices, the Constitutional Court, the University of the Witwatersrand and a growing arts scene. Midrand, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, is home to the Gallagher Convention Centre and many corporate campuses, while Waterfall City is a newer business district nearby. The e-toll history, and what it means now
From December 2013 Gauteng's freeways, including the N1, N3, N12 and R21 around Johannesburg and Pretoria, were tolled electronically by overhead gantries under the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. The system was unpopular and widely unpaid for more than a decade. Government finally withdrew it, and the gantries were switched off at 11:59 pm on 11 April 2024, with the roads agency SANRAL and the province splitting the remaining debt. Freeway driving inside Gauteng is therefore no longer tolled. Conventional toll plazas still operate on national routes leaving the province.

Events and venues in Johannesburg
FNB Stadium in Nasrec, the largest stadium in Africa, hosts football internationals, concerts and big club fixtures. Ellis Park in Doornfontein is the city's main rugby ground. The Johannesburg Expo Centre, also at Nasrec, holds the Rand Show, usually over Easter, and large trade fairs. The Sandton Convention Centre and the Gallagher Convention Centre host conferences year-round. The rugby season runs roughly from February to June for club competition, with test matches mainly from July to September. For match days and conferences, event transportation plans pick-up and drop-off around the venue's traffic arrangements.
Driving realities and intercity routes
South Africa drives on the left. The M1 and N1 are the spine of the northern suburbs, and the N1 through Buccleuch and the Ben Schoeman Highway towards Pretoria are the busiest stretches, heaviest from 6:30 to 9 am and 3:30 to 6:30 pm. Traffic lights at some intersections can go out during power faults or theft of cabling, and junctions then run as four-way stops. Intercity routes by car:
- Pretoria: 55 to 60 km, 45 to 75 minutes.
- Sun City and Pilanesberg: about 170 km, 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Mbombela (Nelspruit), for the Kruger area: about 350 km, 4 to 4 hours 30 minutes.
- Durban: about 570 km, 6 to 7 hours; most people fly.

Entry to South Africa
Many nationalities, including UK, EU, US and Canadian passport holders, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Travellers who need a visa can now apply online: the Department of Home Affairs launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation in August 2026 after a phased pilot, accepted at OR Tambo, Cape Town, King Shaka and Lanseria. The N1 via the Ben Schoeman is the usual route, with the R21 an alternative from the airport side. A morning meeting in Pretoria from Sandton needs a start around 60 to 75 minutes before the appointment in peak traffic.
