Cape Town International Airport (CPT), operated by Airports Company South Africa, is about 20 km east of the city centre, just off the N2. International and domestic flights use a single, connected central terminal building with separate arrival halls. The V&A Waterfront cruise terminal
The Cape Town Cruise Terminal sits at the V&A Waterfront, on the working harbour a short walk from the Clock Tower and the hotels around the basins. The cruise season runs roughly from November to April, when many world cruises and repositioning voyages call, and some lines turn ships around here, which means full disembarkation and embarkation days. Cars collect from the landside pickup area outside the terminal; the confirmation gives the exact bay.
For a cruise pickup, add the ship name and date and the affiliate times the car to disembarkation. Typical plans are the terminal to the airport (25 to 35 minutes), a transfer to a Winelands estate for a few nights, or a day tour of the Peninsula that ends back at the ship with time to spare before all-aboard. Winelands day trips by chauffeur

- Paarl: about 60 km via the N1, 50 to 70 minutes, with Paarl Mountain and several large estates.
- Constantia: the historic estates inside the city, 20 to 30 minutes from the centre.
Book these as city tours and day trips or hourly chauffeur service. The chauffeur waits at each estate, and the plan can change during the day. Many estates ask for tasting or lunch reservations, especially from December to February.
The Cape Peninsula, Chapman's Peak and the coast
A full-day loop from the city usually runs down the Atlantic side through Camps Bay and Hout Bay, over Chapman's Peak Drive, to Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park, then back via Simon's Town and the penguin colony at Boulders Beach and along False Bay through Muizenberg. Allow 8 to 9 hours with stops. Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road and is closed from time to time for rockfall safety or high winds, in which case the route switches to Ou Kaapse Weg. - January to February: peak summer season, SA20 cricket matches at Newlands and heavy traffic on the Atlantic Seaboard.

- March or April: the Two Oceans Marathon, usually around Easter, with road closures in the southern suburbs.

Travelling sensibly in Cape Town
Cape Town is a relaxed city to visit, and a few simple habits keep it that way. Driving realities in the Western Cape
South Africa drives on the left. The N2 links the airport to the city, the N1 runs to Century City, Paarl and beyond, and the M3 serves the southern suburbs. The south-easter wind, strongest from November to February, can close Chapman's Peak Drive and slow traffic on exposed roads. Kloof Nek and Victoria Road are slow on summer weekends. Weekday peaks are roughly 6:30 to 9 am inbound and 4 to 6:30 pm outbound. Distances to other cities are long: the Garden Route town of George is about 430 km, and Johannesburg about 1,400 km, so most travellers fly and book a car at the other end.
Arriving in South Africa through Cape Town
Visitors from the UK, the EU, the US, Canada and many other countries are usually visa-exempt for up to 90 days. Visa nationals can use the Electronic Travel Authorisation launched by the Department of Home Affairs in August 2026, which Cape Town International accepts. Check the rules for your passport before you fly, and carry two blank passport pages.
