Johannesburg's second airport
Lanseria is a privately owned airport about 30 km north-west of Sandton, close to the border of Gauteng and North West province. It has a single passenger terminal handling scheduled domestic flights, mainly to Cape Town and Durban, and a large business and private aviation operation with customs and immigration for international flights. Its smaller scale means quicker walks to the kerb than at OR Tambo, and for travellers staying in the northern suburbs it is often the closer airport.

No rail link, so plan the road trip
Lanseria has no Gautrain station; the nearest Gautrain stations are in Sandton and Midrand, and details are on Gautrain. Most travellers therefore go by car. Rush hours on the N1 Western Bypass and William Nicol Drive can double journey times, and when traffic signals are out during power interruptions, junctions operate as four-way stops. Lanseria is the closest commercial airport to Sun City and the Pilanesberg, about two hours by road, and to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, which is under 30 minutes away. For Kruger and the private reserves, most lodges set gate closing times, and arriving after the gate shuts is not allowed, so book an arrival that leaves a margin in daylight. Weather, seasons and event weeks
Gauteng's summer, roughly October to March, brings short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms, sometimes with hail, and flooded underpasses can slow the N1 for an hour or so. Winter mornings from June to August are dry and cold, with clear skies that suit early private flights. Traffic spikes around rugby test matches at Ellis Park and Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, and the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City, usually held around late November or early December, fills the road to the Pilanesberg. Mention a match or tournament in the booking notes and the chauffeur will plan an earlier departure.
