How pickup works at Albany International Airport (ALB)

ALB sits in the Town of Colonie, roughly 10 miles northwest of downtown, where the Adirondack Northway (I-87) meets the airport road. It has one passenger terminal, with baggage claim on the lower level and a Lodging and Transportation Center inside the claim hall. Downtown Albany, the Capitol and Empire State Plaza

Government business drives much of Albany's weekday travel. The New York State Capitol and the Empire State Plaza, with its agency towers, the Egg performing arts venue and the New York State Museum, fill the top of State Street. The legislative session usually runs from January into early June, and those months bring a steady flow of lobbyists, lawyers and association staff between ALB, the Plaza and the law firms along State Street and Washington Avenue. The Albany Capital Center convention hall sits across Eagle Street from the Plaza, and MVP Arena, the city's main indoor venue, is a few blocks down by the Hudson. Nearby hotels include the Renaissance Albany in the old DeWitt Clinton building and the Hilton Albany on Lodge Street.

Rail: Albany-Rensselaer station

Albany's Amtrak station is across the river in Rensselaer, about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown by the Dunn Memorial Bridge. It is one of the busiest stations in the Amtrak network outside the big cities: the Empire Service runs along the Hudson to New York Penn Station in about 2.5 hours, the Lake Shore Limited continues west to Chicago and east to Boston, and the Adirondack and Ethan Allen Express head north toward Montreal and Vermont. Schedules are on Amtrak. A chauffeur meets trains at the station's pickup area and tracks delays the same way as flights. Intercity trips from Albany

Albany sits where the New York State Thruway (I-90 and I-87) meets the Northway, so it works as a hub for one-way transfers:

• New York City: about 150 miles, usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours on the Thruway or the Taconic, longer into Manhattan at the peak.

• Montreal: about 220 miles, 3.5 to 4.5 hours including the Champlain-Lacolle border crossing. Passports are required.

• Lake Placid and the Adirondacks: about 135 miles, 2.5 to 3 hours.

Local driving notes

Driving is on the right. The Thruway uses cashless tolling by E-ZPass or plate. Peak congestion hits the Northway between exits 1 and 9 on weekday mornings and evenings, the I-787 and I-90 interchange near downtown, and the Patroon Island Bridge. Winter brings snow and freezing rain from December to March. Downtown parking is tight around the Plaza on session days, so chauffeurs set a pickup point by phone rather than circling.

Cancellation and changes

More than 72 hours before pickup, cancelling costs nothing. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%; at 48 hours or less, 50%; at 24 hours or less, or a no-show, 100%. A delayed flight is not a no-show, because the chauffeur follows the tracked landing time. Child seats are free on request.
