Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall: what is the difference?
New York Penn Station is now two connected buildings. The original station sits below Madison Square Garden between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and 31st and 33rd Streets. Moynihan Train Hall, opened on 1 January 2021 inside the former James A. Farley Post Office across Eighth Avenue, is a large daylight concourse above the western ends of the same platforms. Amtrak and LIRR passengers usually find Moynihan the easier exit. NJ Transit passengers come up into the main Penn Station concourse and are closer to the Seventh and Eighth Avenue exits. Train information is on Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and NJ Transit.
Where can cars stop around Penn Station?
There is no private car pickup inside either building, and there is no waiting area for pre-booked cars. The streets around the station are among the busiest in Manhattan, with bus lanes, loading zones and traffic agents who move stopped vehicles on. A pickup therefore works best at a clear, agreed corner.
- 33rd Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues: outside Moynihan's northern entrance. Often the easiest point for Amtrak arrivals.
- 31st Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues: outside Moynihan's southern entrance. Good for cars heading south or to the Lincoln Tunnel and Newark.
- Eighth Avenue: at the entrances opposite Moynihan, on the Madison Square Garden side. Useful for NJ Transit passengers.
- Seventh Avenue: near the NJ Transit exit and the Seventh Avenue entrances, for trips heading east or to LaGuardia.

How long is the drive from Penn Station to the airports?
Penn Station is in Midtown, inside the MTA's Congestion Relief Zone south of 60th Street, which has charged a toll since January 2025. The zone charge for your trip is billed at actual cost and added to the booking. Drive times depend almost entirely on the time of day.

For Newark, the chauffeur usually takes the Lincoln Tunnel and the New Jersey Turnpike. For JFK, the choice between the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Long Island Expressway, or the RFK Bridge and Grand Central Parkway, is made from live traffic. On weekday afternoons, allow the slow end of each range.
Train or car: New York to Boston, Philadelphia and Washington
Many travellers compare the train with a door-to-door car for Northeast Corridor trips. The train is often faster to city centres, while the car suits groups, luggage and addresses away from the stations.

A common pattern is to take the train and book a chauffeur at each end. Longer road trips between cities are booked as intercity transfers.
Which car should you book from Penn Station?
Keep the car compact if you can. Midtown streets are tight, and smaller cars stop more easily.

Departures: getting to your train on time
For a departure, the chauffeur drops you at the entrance nearest your railroad's concourse: Moynihan on Eighth Avenue or 31st or 33rd Street for Amtrak and many LIRR trains, and Seventh Avenue for NJ Transit. Amtrak usually boards trains 10 to 20 minutes before departure, and track numbers are posted shortly before boarding. Allow at least 30 minutes of Midtown traffic for any pickup within Manhattan in the late afternoon.
Penn Station for events at Madison Square Garden
Madison Square Garden sits on top of Penn Station, so concerts, Knicks and Rangers games and other events change the street pattern around the station. Event nights bring road closures, heavy foot traffic and restricted stopping on Seventh and Eighth Avenues and on 31st and 33rd Streets. Fares, waiting and cancellation
The fixed fare includes the vehicle, the chauffeur and 15 minutes of waiting from the train's actual arrival. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute blocks. Cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; 10% applies at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show.
