Which airport should you fly into for Telluride?
Most visitors land at Montrose, which has the most seasonal nonstop flights from major US hubs in winter, then drive south. Telluride Regional (TEX) sits on a mesa at 9,070 feet, the highest commercial airport in North America, and is served by a small regional jet operation plus a steady flow of private aircraft. It is the closest option but the most weather-sensitive: low cloud and snow can send flights to Montrose. Durango (DRO) and Grand Junction (GJT) are useful backups. The road from Montrose
The drive leaves Montrose on US-550 south to Ridgway, turns west on Colorado 62 over the Dallas Divide at about 8,970 feet, then follows Colorado 145 up the San Miguel River past Placerville and the Keystone Hill switchbacks to the Telluride turn. In clear weather it is an easy, scenic hour and a half. In a storm the Divide can be icy and slow. Telluride town and Mountain Village
Telluride is a Victorian mining town at the end of a box canyon, its main street, Colorado Avenue, running east toward Bridal Veil Falls. Much of the town is a National Historic Landmark District with narrow streets and tight parking. Mountain Village sits above it at about 9,500 feet, with the ski resort's base, the Madeline Hotel, the Peaks Resort and the Inn at Lost Creek. The free gondola links the two in about 13 minutes and runs from early morning to around midnight in season; it closes for maintenance in the spring and autumn shoulder seasons, when a car becomes the only link. In town, the New Sheridan Hotel and Hotel Telluride are the landmark addresses. By car, Mountain Village is about 15 to 20 minutes from town via Colorado 145 and Mountain Village Boulevard.
Festival season in the box canyon
Telluride's summer is organised around festivals, and each one changes traffic and parking:
- Late May (Memorial Day weekend): Mountainfilm.
- June: the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Town Park, usually the third weekend.
- August: Telluride Jazz.
- Labor Day weekend: the Telluride Film Festival, when screening venues are spread across town and private jet traffic peaks.
- September: Blues and Brews.
