Trains that arrive at Montparnasse
Montparnasse is the gateway to western and south-western France. The LGV Atlantique and its extensions bring SNCF TGV INOUI and OUIGO trains from Bordeaux in a little over two hours, Rennes in about 1 hour 30 minutes, Nantes in about 2 hours, plus Tours, Le Mans, Angers, La Rochelle, Brest, Quimper, Toulouse and the Basque coast via Bordeaux. Regional TER trains from Chartres and the Loire and the Transilien line N suburban service use the station too.
Metro lines 4, 6, 12 and 13 meet at Montparnasse-Bienvenüe beneath the station, linked by long underground walkways that include a moving walkway.
How the station is laid out
The main building sits behind the Tour Montparnasse office tower, facing Place Raoul Dautry. A large renovation completed in recent years opened up the halls, added shops and simplified signage. The main concourse serves platforms 1 to 24. A separate annex known as Montparnasse 3, or Vaugirard, handles a handful of trains from its own platforms, with a street entrance on Boulevard de Vaugirard; some OUIGO and regional departures use it, and the walk from Vaugirard to the main hall is several minutes. Above the tracks, the Jardin Atlantique is a public garden on the station roof.
Street entrances you will hear about:
- Place Raoul Dautry, the front forecourt facing the tower and Rue de Rennes
- Rue du Commandant René Mouchotte on the west side
- Boulevard de Vaugirard, for the Vaugirard annex
- Boulevard Pasteur, on the south-east side near the garden entrances
Pick-up points and where cars can legally stop
The standard service is curbside. Cars booked in advance use the signposted drop-off and pick-up lanes around the station or the underground car park; they may not wait on the taxi rank or double-park on Rue de Rennes. The chauffeur messages you the exact point once you are off the train, and if you arrived at Vaugirard rather than the main hall, say so, because the best pickup side is different.
If you prefer to be met on the concourse with a name board, add meet and greet. Add-ons are only available in selected locations; the engine shows whether it is available for your arrival.
When your train is running late
Every booking carries the train number. The dispatch team watches its progress, and the chauffeur's schedule moves with the real arrival. The first 15 minutes after arrival are included; beyond that, waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks. Engineering works on the Atlantique line sometimes divert trains to other terminals; if your train is rerouted, call the desk and the pickup is moved.
Bags, pushchairs and seaside luggage
West-coast holiday traffic means a lot of suitcases, surfboards and bikes in summer. A Standard Sedan carries two travellers with two bags. Left Bank hotels, offices and La Défense
The station anchors the 14th and 15th arrondissements. Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Luxembourg Gardens are 10-15 minutes away, the Eiffel Tower and the 7th about 15 minutes, and the ministries of the 7th around 15-20 minutes. Business travellers often head to La Défense (25-40 minutes), to the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre (Paris Expo, 10-15 minutes) or to the corporate campuses of Issy-les-Moulineaux and Boulogne-Billancourt (15-25 minutes).
Versailles and day trips west
