Rail lines under one roof
Taipei Main Station is the island's central rail hub, with most platforms underground.
- Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) to Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Tainan and Zuoying (Kaohsiung), with the fastest trains reaching Zuoying in about 1 h 35.
- Taiwan Railway (TR, formerly TRA) Tze-Chiang, Puyuma and Taroko expresses along the west and east coasts, including Hualien and Taitung.

Exits, the underground city and the pick-up areas
The station building is a square block with a large hall on the ground floor, and exits named by direction: North, South, East and West, each with numbered doors. Below ground, shopping streets and passages link the station to the metro, the Taoyuan Airport MRT and the Taipei Bus Station, which makes it easy to come up far from where you meant. Taxi ranks and pick-up points for pre-booked cars are on the roads around the building, including Zhongxiao West Road on the south side. How the chauffeur meets you
For Taipei Main Station pickups, curbside at the designated pick-up area is the standard service. The chauffeur does not come through the ticket gates or down to the platforms by default. Luggage
THSR coaches have luggage space at the ends of each car. Platforms are underground and connected to the hall by escalators and lifts. Hotels and business districts
The station sits in Zhongzheng district, near the Presidential Office and government ministries. Xinyi, around Taipei 101, is the main financial and shopping district, with the Grand Hyatt and the W Taipei. The Mandarin Oriental is on Dunhua North Road, the Regent in Zhongshan, and the Grand Hotel on the hill at Yuanshan. Technology companies cluster in Neihu and Nangang, where the Nangang Exhibition Center hosts Computex, usually in late May or early June. Taiwan drives on the right, and Taipei's scooter traffic calls for patience at junctions.
Intercity alternatives by car
For destinations off the rail lines a car is simpler. Jiufen and the old mining towns are about 50 to 60 minutes, Yehliu Geopark about 45 minutes to an hour, and Yangmingshan about 40 minutes. Jiaoxi hot springs in Yilan are 50 to 60 minutes through the Hsuehshan Tunnel, and the Hsinchu Science Park is about an hour to 1 h 15.
