Taoyuan or Songshan: know your Taipei airport
Taipei has two airports with very different journey times, so this is the first thing to check.
Taoyuan International is the main international gateway, about 40 km west of the city in Taoyuan. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 handle long-haul and most regional flights, and the north concourse of the new Terminal 3 opened in December 2025, with its passengers still clearing immigration through Terminal 2 until the main Terminal 3 building opens, expected in 2027. The drive to Xinyi or the Taipei Main Station area normally takes 40 to 60 minutes via National Freeway 2 and Freeway 1 or the Airport Expressway, and up to 90 minutes in the evening peak or on holiday weekends.
Songshan is the city airport, inside Taipei itself on the north edge of Songshan District. It handles domestic flights to the outlying islands and short-haul routes such as Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Gimpo and Shanghai Hongqiao. Xinyi is only about 5 km away, usually 15 to 25 minutes, and Neihu's tech offices are closer still. Travellers with the choice often prefer Songshan for exactly that reason.
Airport pickup: what happens after you land
At both airports your chauffeur collects you at the designated pickup area for pre-arranged cars at the arrivals level, and the confirmation says which exit and lane to use at your terminal. Taoyuan's Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate buildings joined by a Skytrain, so check which one your airline uses. A name-board meet and greet inside the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the booking engine shows whether it is available.
Waiting starts at actual landing: 60 minutes on international flights, 30 minutes on domestic ones and 15 minutes at hotels, offices and stations, with 15-minute blocks after that. Taoyuan immigration is usually efficient, and many frequent visitors register for the e-Gate lanes.
Entry to Taiwan: TWAC and visa-free stays
Since 1 October 2025, the paper arrival card has been replaced by the online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC), which visitors complete in the three days before arrival on the National Immigration Agency site. It is free, and one person can submit forms for a family or group. Nationals of many countries can visit visa-free, commonly for 90 days, though the rules depend on the passport. Xinyi, Nangang and Taipei's business map
Xinyi District is the modern core, laid out on a wide grid in the east of the city around Taipei 101, the Taipei World Trade Center and City Hall. Grade-A offices, department stores, embassies and many luxury hotels sit within a few blocks, and the Xinyi Road and Songren Road axes carry most car traffic. Traffic peaks around the office towers from 8 to 9.30 am and 5.30 to 7.30 pm, and on weekend evenings around the malls.
Beyond Xinyi:
- Nangang: the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, software and biotech parks and the high-speed rail station at the eastern edge.
- Neihu Technology Park: headquarters and regional offices for electronics and IT firms, north of the Keelung River.
- Zhongshan and Nanjing East Road: older business corridors with banks and hotels, near Songshan airport.
- Zhongzheng: government buildings, the Presidential Office and Taipei Main Station.
- Da'an: residential and embassy streets, universities and restaurants.
- Tianmu and Beitou: residential areas in the north, with international schools and hot-spring hotels.
Xinyi to Neihu is about 8 km and 20 to 35 minutes; Xinyi to Taipei Main Station about 6 km and 20 to 30 minutes. For regular Taiwan travel, corporate accounts add invoicing and traveller profiles.
Hotels, venues and the event calendar
Frequent pickups include the Mandarin Oriental Taipei on Dunhua North Road, the Regent Taipei on Zhongshan North Road, The Grand Hotel above the Keelung River, and in Xinyi the W Taipei, the Grand Hyatt, the Humble House and the hotels around Taipei 101. Hotel driveways in Xinyi are often below ground or around the side, so give the hotel name and we will use its proper entrance.
The largest venues are the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center halls 1 and 2, the Taipei World Trade Center exhibition hall and the Taipei International Convention Center in Xinyi, the Taipei Arena, and the Taipei Dome, opened in 2023, for baseball and stadium concerts.

Taipei Main Station and high-speed rail
Taipei Main Station combines the Taiwan High Speed Rail, TRA conventional trains, the MRT and the Airport MRT in one complex. Chauffeurs collect at the designated pickup lanes on the station's outer roads, and the confirmation names the gate. Because the station is so large, give your exit number if you know it. Day trips and intercity routes from Taipei
Road trips out of Taipei are practical for families and for visits to industrial parks where rail stations are far from the offices. Typical intercity transfers:

The Hsinchu run on National Freeway 1 or 3 is the most common business trip, serving semiconductor and electronics companies; the morning traffic heading south is heavy. Yilan is reached through the 12.9 km Hsuehshan Tunnel on National Freeway 5, which is fast on weekdays but can queue badly on weekend mornings and holiday returns. Keelung's harbour is the cruise port for northern Taiwan, and passengers can book the pier-to-hotel leg directly. The road to Jiufen narrows near the old town and can be closed to large vehicles on busy days, so a van may drop you at the parking area below.
Driving in Taipei
Taiwan drives on the right, unlike Japan and Hong Kong, and cars are left-hand drive. The most distinctive feature of Taipei traffic is the scooter, and at junctions large numbers of scooters wait in front of cars in dedicated boxes; chauffeurs allow for them when turning. Many roads have bus lanes in the centre that cars must not enter. Street parking is limited, so the chauffeur will usually wait in a nearby car park and return when you call. Typhoon season, roughly July to October, can bring heavy rain and occasional typhoon days when the city government closes offices; we follow the official announcements and contact you if a trip is affected.
Practical tips for Taipei travellers
Carry the hotel's name in Chinese characters as well as English; most drivers read both, but Chinese names remove any doubt at older buildings. Mobile data and messaging apps work well across the city, so keep the chauffeur's number from the confirmation handy. If you land late at Taoyuan and your hotel is in Xinyi, the freeways are usually clear after 10 pm and the trip can drop to about 40 minutes. For early departures, allow for the check-in and security queues at Terminal 2, which can build from 6 am on busy mornings, and book the car with a margin rather than to the minute.
