How do I book a car from Tokyo Station?
Open the reservation engine, choose Tokyo Station, and enter the train name and number from your ticket (for example Nozomi 12 or Hayabusa 20), your destination and a vehicle class. Lines and operators
Tokyo Station is the hub of Japan's rail network.
- JR Central Tōkaidō Shinkansen from Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, with through trains from Hiroshima and Hakata.
- JR East Shinkansen: Tōhoku and Hokkaidō (to Sendai, Aomori, Hakodate), Yamagata, Akita, Jōetsu (Niigata) and Hokuriku (Karuizawa, Kanazawa, Tsuruga).
- Narita Express to Narita Airport, plus the Yamanote, Chūō, Keihin-Tōhoku, Sōbu and Yokosuka lines.
- Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line, with Otemachi and other lines a short underground walk away.
The Tōkaidō Shinkansen platforms are on the Yaesu (east) side; the JR East Shinkansen platforms are next to them. Conventional lines stretch across to the Marunouchi side.
Marunouchi side or Yaesu side?
The station has two faces. The Marunouchi side (west) is the restored red-brick building of 1914, opening onto a broad station plaza that leads to the Imperial Palace, the Marunouchi office towers and Otemachi. The Yaesu side (east) is modern, under the white Grand Roof canopy, facing Nihonbashi, Kyobashi and Ginza, with the highway bus terminal. Both sides have taxi pools and areas where pre-booked vehicles can pick up. Which side you should use depends on your train and your destination, and walking between them inside the station can take ten minutes with bags. How the chauffeur meets you
On a Tokyo Station booking, curbside at the designated pick-up area is the standard service. The chauffeur does not enter the ticket gates or come to the platform by default. A concourse meet, usually outside the Shinkansen ticket gates, is an add-on, and add-ons are only available in selected locations; the reservation engine shows whether it can be added. Japanese trains are famously punctual, but train tracking still matters: the chauffeur is timed to the actual arrival, and if a typhoon or an earthquake check halts services, the pickup follows. At Tokyo Station, included waiting is 15 minutes from the actual arrival, then 15-minute blocks.
Luggage on the Shinkansen and at the station
Since 2020 the Tōkaidō Shinkansen requires advance reservation of the seats with an oversized-baggage area for bags whose three dimensions add up to more than 160 cm. Tokyo Station is vast, so if you have large cases, use the lifts rather than the long escalators, or ask for a concourse meet where it is available. Many travellers send big suitcases ahead with a luggage delivery service (takkyūbin) and carry only small bags; if you do, a Luxury Executive Sedan is ample. Otherwise a Standard Black SUV (six passengers, six bags) or Sprinter Van (12 passengers, 12 small bags) is best.

Hotels and business districts
The Tokyo Station Hotel is inside the Marunouchi building itself. The Four Seasons Marunouchi, Aman Tokyo in Otemachi, the Palace Hotel facing the palace moat and the Mandarin Oriental in Nihonbashi are all within ten minutes. Marunouchi and Otemachi hold the headquarters of many of Japan's largest companies and banks; Nihonbashi and Kyobashi are on the Yaesu side. Trade shows at Tokyo Big Sight and events at Tokyo International Forum, next to the station, are regular reasons for groups to book.
Intercity alternatives by car
Japan's railways are excellent, but a car helps with luggage, groups and places off the main lines. Hakone is about 90 km and 1 h 30 to 2 hours; the Fuji Five Lakes around 2 hours; Nikko about 2 h 30; Karuizawa about 2 h 30; Kamakura about 1 h 15; Yokohama about 40 minutes. Japan drives on the left, expressways are tolled and holiday weeks, such as Golden Week in late April and early May and Obon in mid-August, bring very heavy traffic.
