First, which transfer do you need?
Velana is unusual. The airport on Hulhule
Velana handles international flights from the Gulf, South Asia, Southeast Asia, China and Europe, as well as domestic flights to regional airports. A new international passenger terminal and a seaplane terminal have been built as part of a long expansion programme, and parts of the airport have moved into new buildings in recent years.

Where does the chauffeur meet me at Velana?
Standard service is pickup at the area outside the arrivals hall that the airport designates for road vehicles. The forecourt is compact and shared with resort representatives, hotel shuttles and taxis, so message the chauffeur once you have your bags and they will guide you to the car. At Velana the chauffeur stays outside the building unless you add a greeting.
A name-board greeting at the arrivals exit is available as meet and greet where offered. Add-ons are only available in selected locations; the engine confirms whether it can be added for your flight.
Immigration, customs and the IMUGA declaration
All travellers must complete the free online traveller declaration on the official IMUGA portal within the days before arrival. Tourists of all nationalities are normally granted a free 30-day visa on arrival, provided they hold a confirmed booking and meet the entry conditions. The Maldives has strict customs rules, including a ban on bringing in alcohol, pork products and certain other items. When several wide-body flights land close together, immigration and baggage can take 30 to 75 minutes. At Velana, included waiting is 60 minutes from actual landing, then 15-minute blocks.

Public buses link the airport with Hulhumale and Male, and public ferries cross to Male's waterfront. Both are inexpensive and practical for light travellers. A car suits visitors with luggage, official delegations and anyone arriving late at night.
Vehicles available in the Maldives
The local vehicle pool is smaller than in large cities, and only vehicles suited to Male's narrow streets are practical. The booking engine shows the classes an affiliate can actually supply at your time, which in most cases means the smaller end of the nine web-booker classes.

What the fare includes
The fixed fare covers the vehicle and chauffeur for your route, flight tracking, and included waiting of 60 minutes from landing on international flights (30 minutes on domestic flights). If your flight into Velana is late, the pickup moves with it at no charge. Planning ranges are on the rates page. For Male bookings, cancellation is free more than 72 hours before pickup; within 72 hours it is 10 %, within 48 hours 50 %, and within 24 hours or for a no-show 100 %.
Timing your departure from Male
Because Male and the airport are so close, travellers are tempted to leave late. The bridge approach and Male's one-way streets can be slow at the start and end of the working day, and international check-in at Velana often has long queues when several departures leave together. Leave a Male hotel about three hours before an international flight, or two and a half from Hulhumale. Include the departing flight number on the return booking, so the Velana drop-off is at the correct terminal.
Local customs to know
The Maldives is a Muslim country, and Male follows local dress and conduct norms more closely than the resort islands. Friday is the weekly day of prayer, when many offices and shops in Male close for part of the day and traffic patterns change. During Ramadan, business hours shift and roads can be busy just before sunset. None of this affects your fixed fare, but it helps with planning meetings.
Hulhumale hotels for transit stays
Travellers with a late resort seaplane cut-off, a night flight home, or a domestic connection early the next morning often spend a night in Hulhumale, just north of the airport. It has a long public beach, a growing number of mid-range and business hotels, and is quieter than Male. The drive from arrivals is 10 to 20 minutes, which makes it the simplest overnight option. Seaplanes do not fly after dark, which is the usual reason for a transit night.
