What a chauffeur can and cannot do in the Maldives

Be clear about this before you book. Most Maldives resorts are on their own islands, and guests reach them by the resort's speedboat, by seaplane or by a domestic flight plus a boat. Those transfers are arranged by the resort, not by a car service, and no chauffeur can drive you to an island resort.

Where a car is useful is the triangle of islands joined by road: Hulhule, where the airport is, Male, the capital, and Hulhumale, the reclaimed island next door. Velana International Airport: terminals and pickup

Velana International Airport (MLE) occupies almost all of Hulhule island. Since July 2025 a new international passenger terminal, now Terminal 1, handles all international arrivals and departures, with dedicated seaplane check-in counters, while the old building, now Terminal 2, handles domestic flights to the atolls. The seaplane terminal, opened in October 2022, is on the lagoon side of the island, and resort speedboats leave from jetties next to the arrivals area. The airport is run by Maldives Airports Company.

Road pickups start at the airport's designated pickup area for pre-arranged vehicles, and that curbside pickup is standard. A name-board meet and greet in the arrivals hall is an add-on; add-ons are only available in selected locations, and the booking engine shows whether it is offered for your arrival. Resort representatives also wait in the arrivals area, so if you are mixing a resort transfer with a night in Male, tell both sides what is happening.

Drive times between the airport, Male and Hulhumale

The 2 km Sinamale Bridge, opened in 2018, links Male with Hulhule, and a road runs along the airport island to Hulhumale. Male itself is about 2 km across, with narrow one-way streets, heavy motorbike traffic and little space to stop, so the chauffeur may ask you to walk a short distance to a wider road.

Seaplanes, speedboats and the resort handover

The resort transfer method decides how you plan the day:

• Speedboat resorts, mostly in North and South Male atolls, run boats throughout the day and evening from the airport jetties, typically 15 to 60 minutes to the island.
• Seaplane resorts, farther out, fly only in daylight. A flight landing after mid-afternoon often means a night in Hulhumale or Male and an early return to the seaplane terminal next morning.
• Domestic-flight resorts connect through Terminal 2 to regional airports such as Maamigili, Dharavandhoo, Kooddoo or Gan, followed by a boat.

For a late arrival, the usual pattern is: our chauffeur meets you at the international terminal, drives you to your hotel in Hulhumale or Male, and returns in the morning at the time the resort gives you to take you back to the seaplane terminal or the resort desk. The resort's own team takes over from there. On departure day, we can collect you from a Male hotel or an office and deliver you to international check-in, or meet a resort's boat at the airport jetty for a day room in the city before a late flight. Entering the Maldives in 2026

Every nationality receives a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, provided you hold a passport valid for at least six months, a confirmed booking at a registered resort, hotel or guesthouse, and an onward or return ticket. All travellers must complete the free IMUGA traveller declaration on the official Maldives Immigration portal within 96 hours before arrival; no departure declaration is needed. Importing alcohol, pork products and religious material for non-personal use is prohibited, and customs checks bags on arrival.

Taxes are charged by the government, not by us: the green tax, which doubled in 2026 to USD 12 per person per night at resorts and larger hotels and USD 6 at smaller guesthouses, is billed by your accommodation, and airport departure charges are included in airline tickets. Male city: business, government and where people stay

Male is one of the world's most densely built capitals, and most of the country's government, banking and commerce is here: ministries and the President's Office around the Republic Square area, the central bank, the main commercial harbour and the fish market on the northern waterfront. Business visitors, consultants and delegations typically stay in the city hotels or in Hulhumale, which is newer, quieter and closer to the airport. Hulhumale also has the beach, many of the transit hotels used before early seaplanes, and a growing number of offices and apartments.

Private jets and superyachts in the Maldives

Business jets land at Velana, and the handling agent coordinates arrival at the aircraft; add the tail number and agent to your booking, and the chauffeur is timed for any road leg to Male or Hulhumale. Many private arrivals go straight from the aircraft to a seaplane or resort boat, in which case the resort or handler manages the transfer and no car is needed. When to plan around Maldives seasons and holidays

• December to April: the dry northeast monsoon and peak season, with the busiest arrival days around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
• May to November: the wetter southwest monsoon, with afternoon squalls that can delay seaplanes and occasionally rough sea crossings.
• Ramadan: dates move each year; business hours in Male shorten and many offices close earlier.
• 26 July: Independence Day, with official events and road closures in Male.
• Friday: the weekend day, when offices close and midday prayers slow traffic in the city.

Driving realities in Male and Hulhumale

Traffic keeps left. Male has very few cars relative to motorbikes, streets are narrow, parking is scarce and many roads are one way. Hulhumale has wider, planned streets and is much easier to drive. Distances are short, so the numbers in the table above are about traffic and access, not kilometres. Vehicles on the islands are mostly sedans, SUVs and vans; a stretch limousine or a Rolls-Royce is unlikely to be available, and the booking engine will not show classes that cannot be supplied.

Which vehicle suits a Male transfer?

An executive SUV fits two to four travellers with resort luggage, which tends to be large. A Standard Sedan works for meetings in the capital. Families or groups use a Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van where available, and larger delegations use minicoaches, planned by a coordinator. Armoured vehicles are available from partners on request only after a risk assessment, and availability in the Maldives is limited. A typical Male itinerary, step by step

For an evening arrival on the way to a seaplane resort, a common plan looks like this. First, complete IMUGA before you fly and tell the resort you will overnight near the airport. Second, book a chauffeur from Velana's international terminal to a Hulhumale hotel, 10 to 15 minutes away, with the flight number in the booking so the car is timed to your landing and the included 60 minutes covers immigration and baggage. Third, book the return for the next morning at the time the resort confirms for seaplane check-in, usually early because flights begin at first light. The chauffeur drops you at the seaplane terminal or the resort desk in the arrivals area, where the resort's staff take your bags. On the way home, the pattern reverses: the resort brings you back to the airport, and if your international flight is late in the evening, a car to a Male day room or a Hulhumale restaurant fills the hours in between.
