Masters week: what to expect
The Masters is played at Augusta National Golf Club on Washington Road, usually in the first half of April, with practice rounds from Monday and the tournament from Thursday to Sunday. For that week the city changes. Hotels, rental homes as far as Aiken and Columbia, restaurants and cars are all booked long in advance, and Washington Road runs under a traffic plan managed by local authorities and the club.
- Book early. Vehicles for tournament week are committed months ahead; late requests may only find sedans.
- Know your drop point. Private cars cannot drive to the gates. The chauffeur drops at the point allowed for your badge or hospitality venue and collects you at a meeting place agreed in advance.
- Phones stay out. Mobile phones are not allowed on the course, so set the pickup time and place before you go in. The chauffeur waits at the agreed spot.

Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) and the alternatives
Augusta Regional at Bush Field is about 10 miles south of downtown, with a small terminal and a few daily flights to hubs such as Atlanta and Charlotte. Pickup is curbside outside baggage claim in the area set for pre-arranged cars; the chauffeur texts on arrival. In Masters week, AGS and the smaller Daniel Field, a general aviation airport close to Washington Road, handle a large number of private jets, and ramp slots are tight. The city beyond the golf
Downtown Augusta lies along the Savannah River, which is also the Georgia and South Carolina state line; North Augusta sits on the other bank. Broad Street carries restaurants and the Miller and Imperial theatres, the Riverwalk runs along the levee, and the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center anchors riverfront meetings. Summerville, on the hill west of downtown, holds The Partridge Inn and older neighbourhoods. The medical district, with Augusta University's health sciences campus and several hospitals, brings steady business travel year round, as does the US Army's Fort Eisenhower, formerly Fort Gordon, south-west of the city with its cyber centre. Aiken and the horse country
Aiken, South Carolina, 20 miles north-east, is known for polo, steeplechase and the Aiken Triple Crown races, usually in March. Many Masters guests rent homes there. Travel between Aiken and Washington Road is 35 to 50 minutes on a normal day and far more in tournament week, so leave early or keep a car on hourly hire.
Vehicles for an Augusta trip
A business or Luxury Executive Sedan fits one or two guests. An executive SUV takes golf-week luggage and up to six people. Standard Black SUVs and Sprinter Vans suit corporate hospitality groups moving between a rental house and the course, and minicoaches carry larger client groups. Departing after the final round
Sunday evening of Masters week is the busiest departure window of the year at AGS, Daniel Field and the Atlanta road. Private jets queue for slots, commercial flights are full and I-20 west carries a steady stream of cars. Pre-book the departure car with the same care as the arrival, allow at least an extra hour for the drive to Atlanta, and keep the flight number in the booking so dispatch can adjust if a delay is posted. Many guests choose a Monday morning departure instead, when roads are clearer.
Driving notes
Driving is on the right. I-20 crosses the city west to east and the Bobby Jones Expressway (I-520) loops around the south and into South Carolina. Weekday traffic is light by big-city standards, except on Washington Road near I-20 and during tournament week. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms; spring brings the azaleas and pollen. Augusta has no passenger rail service.
