Arriving at Grantley Adams International
BGI is in Christ Church on the south-east of the island, about 16 kilometres from Bridgetown. It has one passenger terminal. After immigration and customs you exit into the arrivals area; standard pickup is at the designated pre-arranged pickup area outside, where the chauffeur messages you the car details. The ABC Highway (the Errol Barrow, Tom Adams and Grantley Adams stretches) bypasses Bridgetown and is the usual route to the west coast. Morning and late-afternoon traffic on the highway roundabouts adds time, so allow a margin for any evening flight.
The west coast and south coast
The platinum coast of St. James and St. Peter is where most villa and luxury-hotel transfers go: Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane, Holetown, Mullins and the marina at Port St. Charles. The south coast in Christ Church, from Hastings through Rockley, Worthing and St. Lawrence Gap to Oistins, is closer to the airport and busier at night. Bridgetown cruise terminal
Ships berth at the Deep Water Harbour just north of the city centre, and passengers pass through the cruise terminal to the ground transport area, where your chauffeur waits. Around the capital
Bridgetown's historic centre and garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Broad Street, the Careenage and Parliament are walkable; Kensington Oval hosts international cricket; the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in Two Mile Hill is the island's main conference venue. Government and banking meetings concentrate in the city and in Warrens to the north, a 15-minute drive in normal traffic. For a day of meetings, hourly chauffeur service saves parking in town.
Crop Over and the busy months
Crop Over, the island's summer festival, builds through July and ends with Grand Kadooment, usually on the first Monday in August, when roads around the parade route close. Intercity? Island tours by the hour
Barbados has no rail network and its buses and route taxis are aimed at residents, so visitors who want to see the island usually book a car by the hour. A typical loop runs from the west coast up to Animal Flower Cave and North Point, across to Bathsheba and the Andromeda gardens on the rugged east coast, and back through St. John past the view at Hackleton's Cliff.
