Larger cruise ships anchor in Narragansett Bay and tender passengers to the landing beside Perrotti Park on America's Cup Avenue, in the middle of downtown. Most calls fall between September and early November, when New England itineraries peak. Driving realities on Aquidneck Island
Driving is on the right. The Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge charges a toll collected electronically, run by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority; the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge is free. High winds can restrict the Pell Bridge to certain vehicles, and on those days tall vans and coaches may be routed north through Portsmouth instead. Summer weekend traffic on America's Cup Avenue and Memorial Boulevard is slow, and parking downtown is scarce, which is why many visitors prefer a chauffeur who drops at the door.
Arriving from abroad for a Newport stay
Travellers from outside the United States almost always clear customs at Boston Logan or at a New York airport, then drive to Newport. From Logan the chauffeur is timed to the actual landing with 60 minutes of included waiting, which covers most customs queues. Private jets arriving from overseas must land first at an airport with a customs facility before continuing to Newport State or Quonset, so plan the car for the final airfield.
Yacht crews, marinas and the sailing calendar

The nearest Amtrak stop is Kingston station, about 30 to 40 minutes away, with Northeast Corridor trains; Providence station is about 45 to 55 minutes. Cancel more than 72 hours ahead and nothing is charged. Inside 72 hours the fee is 10%, inside 48 hours it is 50%, and inside 24 hours, or on a no-show, it is the full fare.
