Providence station and the rail corridor
Providence station, below the State House lawn, is on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor with Acela and Northeast Regional trains to Boston and New York, and the MBTA's Providence/Stoughton Line to Boston South Station. Driving realities in Providence
Driving is on the right. I-95 runs through downtown and I-195 crosses the Providence River toward East Providence and Cape Cod. The westbound Washington Bridge on I-195 was closed in December 2023, and a replacement began construction in June 2026, so westbound traffic shares the eastbound bridge in both directions with three lanes each way; expect delays at peak hours. Rhode Island has no passenger-car highway tolls apart from the Pell Bridge to Newport; trips into Massachusetts may use the tolled Massachusetts Turnpike. College Hill streets are steep and narrow, and winter nor'easters can slow everything from December to March.
