The one thing to know: La Tontouta is far from town
Noumea's international airport is not in Noumea. La Tontouta sits in the commune of Païta, roughly 50 km north of the city centre, and the drive typically takes 45 to 60 minutes on the expressway through Païta and Dumbéa. That distance is why a pre-booked transfer matters here: taxis at the airport are limited, and the airport shuttle runs on a timetable, not on your flight.
A second change matters in 2026. From 2 March 2026 Air Calédonie moved all its operations from Magenta, the old domestic airport inside Noumea, to La Tontouta. Flights to Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa, the Isle of Pines and the northern towns now leave from the same airport as international services. A traveller heading to the Isle of Pines after a day in town therefore needs a car back out to La Tontouta, not a short run to Magenta. Pickup at La Tontouta
La Tontouta has a single terminal with a large arrivals hall. Standard pickup is curbside at the designated pre-arranged pickup area; the chauffeur sends vehicle details when you land. Noumea cruise terminal
Cruise ships berth at the port on the downtown waterfront, with the terminal beside Moselle marina and the Place des Cocotiers about five minutes' walk away. Noumea is one of the most frequent cruise calls in the South Pacific, with ships from Sydney and Brisbane most weeks in season. Standard pickup is at the terminal's vehicle area. For a day ashore, a chauffeur hour covers the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, the Ouen Toro lookout, the bays and the aquarium in one loop. If you are returning to Australia by air, the drive from the port to La Tontouta takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Where people stay and work in Noumea
- Centre-ville: the Place des Cocotiers, the municipal market, government offices and the port.
- Anse Vata: the main beach and hotel strip, including the Hilton Noumea La Promenade and Le Méridien Noumea at Pointe Magnin, and the casino.
- Baie des Citrons: restaurants and bars along the next bay north.
- Nouville: the peninsula west of the port, with the university campus and the Kuendu beach.
- Tina and Magenta: eastern districts near the Tjibaou Cultural Centre and the golf course.

Road and driving notes
New Caledonia drives on the right. The expressway from Païta to Noumea is the fastest route, and part of it is tolled. Traffic backs up between Dumbéa and the city entrance on weekday mornings and late afternoons. Beyond the Noumea area, roads to the north and the Great South are slower and less lit, so evening arrivals heading out of town are better booked with a planned time.
Entry rules and practical notes for 2026
New Caledonia is a French territory outside the Schengen area, with its own entry rules. Visitors from Australia, New Zealand, the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Japan and many other countries can stay up to three months in six without a visa. You need a passport issued within the last ten years and valid at least three months after departure, plus proof of onward travel and funds. The currency is the CFP franc (XPF). Events worth planning around
- Foire de Bourail: the country's big agricultural fair on the west coast, usually in August.
- School holidays and the southern-winter season: Australian and New Zealand school breaks lift flight and hotel demand, especially in July and September.
- Cruise peaks: the southern summer brings more ship calls, so port days get busy from about October to April.
