Drive times from the airport
Airport to the CBD is typically 30 to 50 minutes via State Highway 20 and the Waterview Tunnel or via State Highway 1, and can reach 60 to 75 minutes on a weekday evening peak or when the Southern Motorway is disrupted. Newmarket and Parnell take about 25 to 45 minutes. The North Shore, including Takapuna and Albany, usually means 40 to 70 minutes because the route crosses the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Arriving in New Zealand: NZeTA, the levy and biosecurity
Most visitors who do not need a visa must hold a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority before they board. That includes visa-waiver travellers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and EU countries, and it also applies to passengers transiting through Auckland. The NZeTA is requested through the official Immigration New Zealand app or website, and most applicants also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, which rose to NZ$100 in October 2024. Every arrival also completes the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, the customs and biosecurity declaration for each trip. New Zealand's biosecurity checks are strict: food, plant material, outdoor equipment with soil and animal products must be declared, bags are x-rayed or checked by detector dogs, and failing to declare risk goods can bring an instant fine of NZ$400 under rules run by the Ministry for Primary Industries. The Waterfront, the cruise terminal and ship days
Auckland's waterfront runs from Britomart and Queens Wharf west past Princes Wharf and the Viaduct Harbour to the Wynyard Quarter. Rail: the City Rail Link and the Northern Explorer
Auckland's commuter rail changed in September 2026 when the City Rail Link opened. The twin tunnels run from Waitematā station (the old Britomart) under the city centre to new stations at Te Waihorotiu, near Aotea Square, Karanga-a-Hape on Karangahape Road and Maungawhau at Mount Eden. For business travellers this makes the CBD easier to reach by train from the south and west, but there is still no rail link to the airport, so a car remains the direct option with luggage.
