WLG sits on the Rongotai isthmus, about 8 km from the CBD. Most large cruise ships berth at Aotea Quay in the commercial port, north of the CBD, where passengers leave through a terminal area rather than walking straight into town. Smaller ships sometimes use Queens Wharf. The cruise season runs roughly October to April. A private car suits a shore day to Martinborough, Zealandia or the Wētā Workshop in Miramar, and a pre-booked car gets you to WLG on turnaround day without the shuttle queue. Driving in and around Wellington
New Zealand drives on the left. Wellington's streets are steep and narrow in Kelburn, Thorndon and Oriental Bay, and the wind is part of daily life, so an SUV's weight and clearance are useful on the hill suburbs. State Highway 1 and SH2 carry commuters from Porirua and the Hutt Valley, and the Transmission Gully motorway north of the city is not tolled. The Remutaka Hill road to the Wairarapa is winding; allow extra time. New Zealand has few toll roads and none on Wellington routes.
Arriving from overseas: NZeTA and biosecurity
Most visa-waiver travellers, including US, Canadian, UK and EU passport holders, need an NZeTA before they fly, applied for through the official app or website, and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is collected in the same application. Australian citizens do not need one. New Zealand's biosecurity rules are strict: declare all food, plant material and outdoor gear, or risk an instant fine. Cancel more than 72 hours ahead at no charge. At 72 hours or less the charge is 10%, at 48 hours or less 50%, and at 24 hours or less or on a no-show 100%. A late or diverted flight is tracked and is never treated as a no-show.
