Reno-Tahoe International (RNO): where the car waits
RNO has one terminal with two concourses, B and C, and a single baggage claim hall on the lower level. Commercial pickups, including pre-arranged chauffeured cars, use the ground transportation loop outside baggage claim, at Door D according to the airport's current signage. That is standard curbside service: the chauffeur messages the vehicle and plate when your flight is on the ground. Mountain passes, chain controls and winter vehicles
Reno sits at about 4,500 feet, but every road to the lake climbs. The Mt Rose Highway (SR-431) tops out near 8,900 feet on its way to Incline Village, and I-80 crosses Donner Summit west of Truckee. Between November and April, Nevada and California both post chain controls, and Caltrans or Nevada DOT can hold traffic during storms. For a Tahoe transfer in those months, choose an executive SUV: it carries skis and boot bags and handles snow-covered grades. Summer is the opposite problem: heavy lake traffic on SR-28 and US-50 on weekends, and occasional wildfire smoke or closures in late summer.
Downtown, Midtown, South Meadows and Sparks
Downtown Reno packs the casino towers along Virginia Street under the Reno Arch: Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus, joined as THE ROW, plus the Truckee River Walk and the ballpark. Midtown, just south, holds the restaurants and bars. Further south along South Virginia Street and I-580 sit the Peppermill and the Atlantis, both close to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, and the South Meadows office parks. The Grand Sierra Resort is east of the airport. Sparks, a separate city, has Victorian Square and the Nugget. The University of Nevada, Reno is on the north edge of downtown.
Business travel to the industrial parks
A large share of weekday bookings are not casino trips. The Tahoe Reno Industrial Center at McCarran, east along I-80 in Storey County, holds battery, data-centre and logistics campuses, and visiting engineers, auditors and investors need a car that waits during a plant tour. - Sacramento: about 130 miles over Donner Summit on I-80, 2 to 2.5 hours in clear weather.
- San Francisco: about 220 miles, typically 3.5 to 4.5 hours, more in Bay Area traffic.

Train and bus arrivals
Amtrak's California Zephyr, which runs once daily in each direction between Chicago and Emeryville in the Bay Area, stops at the Reno station downtown, where the tracks run in a trench below street level; the same train also stops at Truckee. The westbound crossing of the Sierra is scenic but often late in winter, so the chauffeur tracks the train rather than the timetable. Schedules are on Amtrak.
Getting around Reno: practical notes
Driving is on the right. I-80 runs east to west through the centre and I-580 south toward Carson City; traffic is light by California standards, with short peaks on I-580 and at the Spaghetti Bowl interchange. There are no toll roads. Nevada time is Pacific time, the same as California. Child seats are free on request.
