A Lake Tahoe airport transfer with BlaakLane.com usually starts at Reno-Tahoe International (RNO), 35 to 60 miles from the lake depending on the shore. Reno-Tahoe International (RNO): where pickup happens
RNO has one terminal with two concourses. Pre-arranged limousine and car pickups load outside baggage claim at Door D, in the ground transportation loop; that is our standard curbside pickup, and the chauffeur texts the vehicle details when you land. Every flight is tracked. Included waiting runs from the actual landing: 30 minutes for domestic flights, which covers nearly every RNO arrival, 60 minutes for international flights, and 15 minutes on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. Ski bags come off the belt slowly on powder days, and the allowance is built for that.

Winter driving and chain controls
The lake sits at about 6,225 feet and every road in climbs higher: Mt. Rose Highway tops out near 8,900 feet, I-80 crosses Donner Summit, and US-50 crosses Spooner Summit from Nevada and Echo Summit from Sacramento. California (Caltrans) and Nevada (NDOT) post chain controls during storms. Under the usual intermediate level, chains are required except on four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tyres; at the highest level everyone chains or the road closes. What this means for your booking:
- Book an executive SUV for December to March; it is the vehicle most likely to keep moving under chain control.
- On storm nights, the chauffeur may pick the lower route (I-80 to Truckee rather than Mt. Rose, for example) and will tell you why.
- Very occasionally a pass closes outright. The chauffeur holds a safe plan rather than pushing through, and we re-time the trip with you.

North shore, south shore and Truckee
The lake straddles California and Nevada, and the two shores feel like different towns. The north shore runs from Tahoe City through Kings Beach to Incline Village, with the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe and the lakeside homes of Crystal Bay. Truckee, 15 miles north, has its historic downtown and sits close to Northstar, where The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe is mid-mountain. The south shore gathers the Stateline casino hotels, Edgewood Tahoe with its lakeside golf course, and Heavenly's gondola from the village. The west shore between Tahoe City and Emerald Bay is quiet and narrow, and SR-89 at Emerald Bay closes at times in winter.
Ski resorts and the car you need
Palisades Tahoe, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics, has two base areas linked by gondola. Northstar and Heavenly are the other big names, with Kirkwood, Sugar Bowl, Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose closer to their own passes. A ski-week booking pairs well with hourly chauffeur service on arrival day, so groceries and rental pickups happen on the way in. Sacramento and Bay Area arrivals
Some guests fly into Sacramento (SMF) and drive about 100 to 120 miles on US-50 or I-80, roughly 2 to 2 hours 30 minutes in good weather. From the Bay Area it is about 190 miles to the lake, 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes, and much longer on a Friday in ski season. Private aviation
Truckee Tahoe Airport (TRK) takes most private jets bound for the north shore and Northstar, and Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) in South Lake Tahoe serves smaller aircraft. Summer events and busy weeks
- July: the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe, usually around mid-July, and the Fourth of July fireworks on both shores.
- July and August: Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival at Sand Harbor, where parking fills early.
- Year-round: concerts at the Stateline casino venues and the Tahoe Blue Event Center.
- Holiday weeks: Christmas to New Year and Presidents' Day weekend bring the heaviest traffic of the year.

Lakeside weddings and corporate retreats
Summer at the lake brings weddings at Edgewood, on the private beaches of the north shore and at mountaintop venues reached by gondola, plus corporate retreats at the Hyatt in Incline and the Ritz-Carlton at Northstar. These programmes usually mix an airport shuttle loop from RNO, evening moves between hotel and venue, and a late return after the reception. Narrow lake roads and limited parking at many venues favour a Sprinter or minicoach shuttling guests rather than many cars. Rail to the mountains
Amtrak's California Zephyr stops in Truckee and in downtown Reno, and a chauffeur can meet the train at either station. Arrivals can run late in winter, so tell us the train number and we time the pickup to its actual arrival.
