Cyril E. King Airport (STT): how the pickup works
STT sits on the island's southwest shore, a short hop west of Charlotte Amalie. It has one passenger terminal, and arrivals exit straight to the kerb, where the taxi dispatch stand and the pre-arranged pickup area sit side by side. Standard service is curbside at that designated pickup point: the chauffeur messages the vehicle details as your flight lands and meets you as you walk out. Being met at the arrivals door with a name board costs extra, and add-ons are only available in selected locations.

Entry and customs notes for 2026
The U.S. Virgin Islands are US territory. US citizens flying in from the mainland or Puerto Rico do not need a passport, only the ID the airline accepts, although a passport makes the return and any BVI side trip easier. Other nationalities need the same US entry documents they would use for Miami or New York. The territory sits outside the US customs zone, so on the way home every passenger clears US Customs and Border Protection inside STT before the flight. Distances are short but the roads climb steep hills, bend sharply and choke up through downtown when ships are in. On a busy cruise day, the Veterans Drive waterfront can add 20 minutes.
Driving on the left, on steep roads
St. Thomas drives on the left, even though most vehicles are left-hand drive, and posted limits are low, often 20 to 35 mph. Hairpins above Charlotte Amalie, narrow lanes on the North Side and occasional goats or chickens on the road make local knowledge matter. That is why trips here go to island operators who drive these roads every day rather than visitors in rental cars.
Cruise days at Havensight and Crown Bay
St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise calls in the Caribbean. Ships berth at two piers: Havensight (the West Indian Company dock) east of downtown, and Crown Bay to the west near the airport, with extra ships anchoring and tendering to the waterfront. Red Hook, St. John and the BVI
Red Hook on the East End is the ferry base for St. John: the crossing to Cruz Bay takes about 20 minutes, with a car barge alongside. Ferries to Tortola and Virgin Gorda leave from Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook; the British Virgin Islands are a separate country, so passports and customs apply there. Resorts, marinas and villas

Which vehicle for St. Thomas?

Events worth booking early
- March: the St. Thomas International Regatta, usually sailed out of the East End.
- April to May: the Virgin Islands Carnival in Charlotte Amalie, with parades and the food fair downtown.
- November to April: peak cruise and villa season, when ship days fill the waterfront.

Is St. Thomas safe to get around?
No State Department advisory applies, as it is US territory, and most visitor problems are petty theft and opportunistic crime, as in many ports. Practical habits help: keep valuables out of sight at beaches, and prefer a pre-booked car to walking the unlit roads between Charlotte Amalie bars and hotels late at night.
