Eagle or Denver: which airport works better?
Eagle County Regional in Gypsum is the closest airport, with seasonal nonstops from large US hubs in the ski months and a smaller schedule the rest of the year. Denver has far more flights, including international arrivals, but the drive crosses the Continental Divide through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel and then Vail Pass, and winter storms regularly add hours. Getting into the gated village
Beaver Creek sits above the town of Avon, and the Village Road climbs from US-6 past a staffed welcome gate. Cars carrying guests to lodging are let through; give the chauffeur your hotel or property name so the gate can wave the vehicle on. Inside, the village core is a car-free plaza with heated walkways and escalators, so drop-offs happen at hotel entrances, the transportation centre or skier drop-off zones. The upper neighbourhoods of Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead are reached by their own roads and are also linked on skis. Winter driving on I-70
Colorado's traction law applies on I-70 between Morrison and Dotsero when conditions call for it: passenger vehicles need adequate tread with snow or mud-and-snow tyres, or four-wheel or all-wheel drive. In harder storms the state moves to a chain law, and Vail Pass and the tunnel approaches can close for hours. We default to all-wheel-drive SUVs in winter and time Denver departures around the forecast. Which vehicle should you book?
Executive SUVs are the default: four passengers with skis in a roof box or cargo area. A Standard Sedan suits one or two travellers in summer. Families with boot bags often take a Standard Black SUV, and a Sprinter Van carries a full ski party from Denver in one run. Minicoaches and motorcoaches serve corporate groups. Arriving from abroad
Most international visitors to Beaver Creek clear US Customs and Border Protection at their first US airport, often Denver, then connect or drive west. Budget the full 60 minutes of included waiting at DEN on international arrivals, as immigration queues vary by time of day. Eagle County runs a seasonal schedule, so check current routes and terminal notes on the Eagle County Regional Airport site before booking a tight connection. Canadian and European visitors usually find the Denver drive the simplest single leg; those arriving late in the evening often stay a night near the airport and make the mountain crossing in daylight.
Nearby resorts and day trips
Vail is 10 miles east along I-70 (see Vail); Aspen is reached in winter through Glenwood Springs because Independence Pass closes from about November to late May (see Aspen); Breckenridge and Keystone are over Vail Pass.
