Two airports: which one are you flying into?
Hilton Head travellers land at one of two places, and the choice changes the transfer.
Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV) is about 45 miles from the island in Georgia and carries most jet service. The drive to Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes usually takes 50 to 70 minutes via I-95 or SC-170 and US-278. Pickup is at SAV's designated commercial pickup area outside baggage claim. Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) sits on the north end of the island, a few minutes from Hilton Head Plantation and 15 to 25 minutes from Sea Pines. Its runway suits regional jets, and airline service from American, Delta and United is heavily seasonal, busiest in spring and summer. The terminal is small, so the car waits at the airport's designated pickup area steps from the door. Schedules are posted on the Hilton Head Island Airport site.
Either way, flights are tracked and waiting is included: 30 minutes on domestic flights, 60 on international, 15 on other pickups, then 15-minute blocks. A name-board meet and greet inside is an add-on, only available in selected locations. HHH also has a busy general aviation ramp; planeside cars go through private aviation.

Getting on and off the island
Every car reaches Hilton Head over the US-278 bridges from Bluffton, the only road access. Saturdays in summer are changeover days for rental homes, and westbound traffic off the island can stack up for miles by late morning. We plan Saturday departures to SAV with extra buffer and suggest early flights or late-afternoon departures when you have the choice. Once on the island, the Cross Island Parkway links the bridges to Sea Pines Circle and the south end faster than William Hilton Parkway.

Gated communities and resorts
Much of the island is organised into gated "plantations": Sea Pines on the south end with Harbour Town, Shipyard, Palmetto Dunes, Port Royal, Wexford, Long Cove and Hilton Head Plantation. Each has its own gate rules and pass system for vehicles. Give us the house address and, if you have it, the gate code or rental confirmation; the chauffeur registers at the gate so you are not stuck on the phone. Resorts chauffeurs know well include The Inn & Club at Harbour Town, the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront, The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort, and Montage Palmetto Bluff across the water in Bluffton.
Bluffton, Palmetto Bluff and the mainland side
Not everyone staying for Hilton Head is on the island. Bluffton, on the mainland just before the bridges, has grown into its own town with Old Town Bluffton on the May River, Belfair, Berkeley Hall and Colleton River among its private golf communities, and Palmetto Bluff with the Montage resort and its village. From SAV, Bluffton is 35 to 45 minutes, noticeably quicker than the island because it avoids the bridges and island traffic. Wedding parties often split between Palmetto Bluff and island hotels, which means shuttle loops across US-278; a coordinator plans those so guests are not waiting on the causeway. Evening dinners in Old Town Bluffton from an island rental are a short hop, and a car on hourly service means nobody has to drive back over the bridge.
RBC Heritage week in April
The PGA Tour's RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, usually the week after the Masters in mid-April, is the island's biggest week. Sea Pines controls traffic and parking inside its gates, and spectators often use designated shuttle lots. What works for guests with hospitality or tee-time plans:
- Book the week as soon as you have dates; cars are committed early.
- Agree the drop point with us; access inside Sea Pines depends on the passes you hold.
- Keep the car on hourly service for dinners at Harbour Town or Shelter Cove.
- Pair it with the Masters: Augusta is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours away.
Event dates are on the RBC Heritage site; multi-car plans are under event transportation.
Other seasons
- Spring: golf groups, school spring breaks and the busiest arrival weeks at HHH.
- June to August: family beach season and Saturday changeovers.
- Autumn: the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival and Concours d'Elegance, usually around late October or early November, and peak wedding season at beach clubs and in Bluffton.

Which vehicle fits an island trip?
Families with a week of luggage, strollers or golf clubs usually want an executive SUV. Two travellers with light bags fit a Standard Sedan. A Standard Black SUV or Sprinter Van takes a golf foursome with bags or a multigenerational family in one car, and minicoaches move wedding guests from resorts to a venue. Beyond the island
- Savannah: dinner in the Historic District, about an hour each way.
- Charleston: about 95 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours.
- Jacksonville: around 170 miles, 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Daufuskie Island is reached by ferry; we drop at the landing.

Island driving facts
South Carolina drives on the right. The speed limits inside the plantations are low and strictly enforced, and cyclists share many roads, so island trips are unhurried by design. Deer and alligators near lagoons are part of the landscape. Hurricane season runs June to November, and evacuation orders close the bridges to inbound traffic.
