Crossing the King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia
The King Fahd Causeway runs about 25 kilometres from western Bahrain to Al Khobar in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, with a border and customs complex on an artificial island halfway across. It is the busiest land crossing in the Gulf for business travel, weekend traffic and families, and queues on Thursday evenings and at the end of Saudi holidays can add an hour or more.
A cross-border chauffeured trip is not an instant booking. Vehicles need the right registration, insurance and permits for both countries, and passengers need the correct entry documents: a Saudi visa or eVisa where required, and for the return, Bahraini entry. The Bahrain International Circuit at Sakhir, about 30 kilometres south of Manama, has hosted the Bahrain Grand Prix since 2004. The race is usually held in March or April. The 2026 race at Sakhir was cancelled by Formula One in March because of the regional conflict, so check the circuit's official site for the next confirmed date before planning around it. On race weekends, roads to Sakhir are managed with designated drop-off zones, and pre-booked cars must follow the circuit's traffic plan; allow 60 to 90 minutes from Manama on race day rather than the usual 35.
Sakhir is also home to Exhibition World Bahrain, the country's large exhibition and convention venue, which opened in 2022 and hosts trade shows and conferences through the cooler months. The Bahrain International Airshow is held at Sakhir Air Base, traditionally in November of even-numbered years.
Arriving in Bahrain: visas and customs
Bahrain offers an eVisa and visa-on-arrival for many nationalities, while GCC citizens enter freely. Rules differ by passport and change from time to time, so confirm your own eligibility on the government's eVisa portal before you fly. Immigration and baggage at BAH usually take 20 to 45 minutes. Customs rules on alcohol, medicines and cash are strict across the Gulf; declare anything you are unsure of. The 60-minute included wait is designed to absorb a normal immigration queue.
Driving realities in Bahrain
Traffic drives on the right. The main arteries are the King Faisal Highway along the northern coast, the Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Causeway and the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Causeway linking Muharraq to Manama, and the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Highway south to Riffa and Sakhir. Rush hours run roughly 7 to 9 am and 2 to 5 pm on working days, when government offices close in the early afternoon. The weekend is Friday and Saturday. There are no road tolls inside Bahrain.
