At MRY, pickup is at the curb in front of the terminal, a short walk from baggage claim. The airport is building a replacement terminal, so kerb layouts may shift during works; the chauffeur messages the exact spot. The Peninsula also holds Cypress Point, Spanish Bay, the Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Poppy Hills, and Pebble Beach has hosted the U.S. Open many times. Golf travellers generally want an executive SUV for clubs and a car that waits between rounds. 17-Mile Drive, the private road through Pebble Beach, charges a per-vehicle entry fee at its gates for visitors and restricts large coaches; hotel guests follow the resort's own arrangements.
Old Monterey, Cannery Row and the rest of the Peninsula
Downtown Monterey and Old Monterey hold the adobes, the Monterey Conference Center and hotels such as the Portola Hotel & Spa and Hotel Pacific. Cannery Row, a few minutes north, has the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Monterey Plaza Hotel and InterContinental The Clement. Fisherman's Wharf is at the harbour. Onward to the Bay Area and down the coast
Beyond the airport runs, one-way transfers go to San Jose (about 70 miles, 75 to 100 minutes), San Francisco (about 115 miles, 2 to 2.5 hours) and Silicon Valley offices such as Palo Alto (about 85 miles, 1.5 to 2 hours). Santa Barbara is about 240 miles on US-101, 4 to 4.5 hours. Rail travellers use Amtrak's Coast Starlight at Salinas station, about 20 miles and 25 to 30 minutes from Monterey.

Driving is on the right. SR-1 is the spine of the Peninsula and slows badly at the Carmel and Pacific Grove junctions on summer weekends and during Car Week. Fog is common on summer mornings.
